American Inventor Spot did a taste test of several types of non-name brand sodas, not comparing them to the major brand equivalents, but just to see how they stood on their own. After all, you can get quite a deal when you buy the store-brand soda instead of a national brand. With brands from Albertsons and Wal-Mart, they rated each soda on flavor, aftertaste, scent, consistency and design before giving it an overall score. Their favorite was Dr. Bold, a Dr. Pepper facsimile from Albertsons.
The problem with generic sodas is that because they vary from place to place, it's hard to know when you're going to get a good one. Fortunately, they're usually inexpensive enough that even if the soda isn't that great, you're only out about a quarter, but I still like to know where I can get a good one. For example, Safeway Select sodas are always on sale and are very good, not to mention that they seem to come in an almost endless number of flavors (though you might want to think twice before buying the diet orange). It's worth picking up a six pack or four when you have a chance.
Do you buy store brand sodas, and if so, tell us where in the comments.

Wal-Mart used to have Diet Mountain Lighting but quit making it, it was a close second to Kroger, so I've been drinking the Kroger since Wal-Mart stopped. Very rarely do I get the Diet Mountain Dew unless it's the only thing available. Just don't see paying more than a penny an ounce for ANY soda, Krogers 2-liters are best for the price.

Wow, I could not believe how good it was, and now I prefer it to Coke & Pespi!! I also stock Sam's Twist Up! Much better than 7UP or Sprite. Not to mention the great price!! So there is an option to the high priced, over rated Big Brands! Check it out!

We happened to be out though, and stopped by the Winn Dixie (in Florida) and they were having a sale on their brand, Chek Cola. We got a bunch of different flavors. All the following references are for DIET drinks, btw: I think the coke knockoff, the lime coke and the vanilla coke are HORRIBLE, the root beer, creme soda and ginger ale are OK to PRETTY GOOD, but some of the others, Grape, Strawberry and the Doctor Pepper knock off in particular, are REALLY REALLY GOOD, almost a yummy treat rather than a beverage! Stay away from that diet with lime, though...AGGGHHH!

Rite Diet products may be regional (South). They make a wonderful White Grape diet soda that is out of this world.

Anyways when I was still addicted to soft drinks I made sure to stock up on Diet Dr B from HEB everytime I went back to Texas. I preferred the taste (and the price to any other soft drink). Plus it was from HEB.
