Athletes, regular hard-working folks, and vegetarians who eat dairy can best benefit from the protein in whey as opposed to other forms of protein. Whey protein's amino acid makeup, branched chain amino acids (BCCAs), are metabolized directly into muscle tissue and are the first ones used when a muscle cell is taxed in exercise. These "lean muscle tissues" rely on BCCAs to begin the rapid replenishing and rebuilding of the cells.
Whey protein is also easily digested and gets into the bloodstream much more rapidly than proteins found in meats and even tofu. Tofu is great, mind you, but you'd have to eat several blocks a day to get the equivalent benefit from whey protein. This also assumes you are looking to build lean muscle mass and lose fat on especially arduous exercise program. Otherwise, any experienced vegetarian knows how to get all the protein they need. Carnivores too.
Lastly, in defense of whey, it is the abundance of the amino acid leucine in whey that makes it a no brainer addition to your program. Leucine promotes muscle protein synthesis and growth. Glutathione is also found in whey at high levels and is an anti-oxidant that plays an important role in the immune system: heavy exercise can deplete the body of Glutathione.
There is plenty of information to be found on the benefits of whey in your routine, though there are also detractors. I have found it to be very useful in strength training and weight management.
The picture shows my favorite brand, though there are plenty. You can buy it in bulk at some Whole Foods, Vitamin Cottages, etc.

Unjury for me because it's the most innocuous in flavor, has no carbs or fat, and is so easy to digest, especially the unflavored which boosts anything I add it to, that it's almost not even there. Care to share why the above brand is YOUR favorite??

It's the only brand whose flavor I can stomach and texture is consistant. I must have drank at least 25lbs of their stuff and it shows. :)
My understanding is that you'll want a bit of fat with your protein shake to help yoru body digest/absorb it. Otherwise, your body will just flush out some of it out.
Oh yeah, if you drink more than 2 or 3 scoops of that stuff a day, make sure you have an office to yourself or a bathroom close by. ;) Lastly, do yourself a huge favor and get one of those shake shakers at your local vitamine shop, it makes shaking easier.

Unjury mixed with Crystal Lite (any flavor) is 85 calories and zero fat, with a water content (as opposed to milk).

Sure - they've got to get their material from somewhere, but this one reads like it was written by Optimum Nutrition's PR department - "so that you hard-working bloggers don't have to".
And I don't quite understand commenter #2's recommendation about a bathroom. Perhaps I don't want to know. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the stuff, is it...
Seems like not only are the Slashfood bloggers' entries declining in quality, the commenters' are too.

As for for my bathroom comment. Drinking protein powder will generally leave the person with excessive amount of bloating and gas. If more than 2 or 3 scopes are ingested in any given day, the drinker will more often than not feel bloated. It's a common joke among people that takes the protein on a regular basis. Anyone with a slight lactose intolerance will see this effect since whey is a by product of milk. This is a side-effect due to the inherent nature of the product. I hope this answers you question.

I had bought some of the E4B fruit puree drinks you mentioned here at SLashfood http://www.slashfood.com/2006/08/24/drink-your-fruit-not-fruit-juice/
The rasberry/blueberry puree is very tasty when mixed with the chocolate or vanilla protein shake mixes.

If you're active daily and want to build muscle, I also recommend using casein protein about an hour before you sleep. It's slow acting and helps to counterbalance the body's breakdown of protein while you are inactive.

The most effective whey protein is one Made by AST Sports Science called VP2 Whey Isolate. www.ast-ss.com It's has quite a few published scientific studies showing its effectiveness in promoting muscle growth and fat loss far better than other proteins. It's more expensive but far more effective.
