It's only been open for three weeks now in New York, but it looks like chocolate shop Max Brenner, aka Chocolate by the Bald Man, is an early hit. And would you expect anything less from a bakerycaferestaurantretailstore that, according to Jason Perlow, "has all the makings of a complete Willy Wonka experience, minus the Oompa Loompas?" Perlow has more photos on his blog from his visit there, but I was particularly taken with the chocolate pizza. I wonder if they deliver?

You can also get Chocolate Pizza on the West Coast, on West Third Street in Los Angeles.
Before one of my trips to Los Angeles, I prepared by reading some of the "Ask Jonathon Gold" columns at the LA Weekly. One of them was about chocolate pizza:
"Question: I had a dream last night. A dream that I was eating delicious, delicious chocolate pizza. Then I woke up. Speak to me, Mr. Gold. Tell me that it wasn’t just a dream."
"Answer: Chocolate pizza, like Eldorado, is a quest that has obsessed humankind for hundreds of years, or at least since the days of conquest.
...
" But Café Veneto, the casual sister restaurant of the excellent Locanda Veneta next door, seems to have mastered the ancient difficulties, and the chocolate-hazelnut pizza, essentially a lightly caramelized pizza crust split, stuffed with Nutella and sprinkled with powdered sugar, is supreme in its category — beautifully crunchy, not too sweet, and oozing what I believe cereal commercials call “chocolatey goodness.” ... I wasn't able to make it to Cafe Veneto, but maybe next time....
(do they still serve the chocolate pizza?)

You can also get Chocolate Pizza at Piece in Chicago (1927 West North Avenue). Rachael Ray filmed part of her Windy City visit there, where Rick Nielsen (of Cheap Trick fame and 'silent partner') specially prepared one for her. Her trademark "AWESOME" was off the Richter Scale! Personally, I usually go there for the hand-crafted beers, but next time I'm back in my hometown, I'll definitely try a slice of the Chocolate 'Za for dessert!
