We already know that chewing gum can help keep your breath fresh as the springtime. Chewing gum can also help to "wash" away nasty plaque and bacteria because it causes you to salivate. Now, scientists have developed a chewing gum uses the good bacteria Lactobacillus found in yogurt to kill of the decay-causing bacteria found in your mouth.
According to Dr. Andreas Reindl of BASF, "The effectiveness has been demonstrated and the first oral hygiene products containing probiotic lactobacilli are scheduled to appear in 2007."
Of course, this doesn't mean you should stop brushing your teeth, flossing, and visiting your dentist regularly.

It was supposed to be able to dissolve decay without damaging the existing living enamel of teeth. When I asked my dentist about it, he laughed. That was the last time I ever heard that item mentioned. The American Dental Society is a very powerful group. They certainly aren't about to allow the creation of anything that would severely damage their ability to make a very good living. Good luck with the gum. I hope it tastes good.

While it maybe proven in labratory test that the yogurt chewing gum could prevent tooth dacay, it is in no way to be considered for use instead of brushing and flossing. Ask any dentist and they will tell you the same thing. And people with partials and denture need not worry about this gum for it use on preventing caries due to the fact they are made from acrylic. The best thing it could do is taste good and not stick. And most likely its just another ploy to make money. Keep brushing, flossing, and seeing your dentist every 6 mnts- and you won't have any problems!

First to 'Marion Springman'-- The answer to your question lies within the now common diary industry practice of adding positive flora bacteria, typically including acidophilus and lactobacillus bifidus to milk so that the milk sugars then become easier to digest, (as an aside, as a species we were never meant to drink cows milk, let alone continue to drink milk of any kind beyond the weening period, after which all animals are transitioned to their normal diets. The truth is, 'lactose-intolerance' is typical of all humans once they are of an age that they should no longer be subsisting on milk) . These bacteria that are added to milk are called friendly in that they work synergistically in the gut to aid the digestive process, (and literally make the dairy industry's primary product more 'palatable' to the public). These frinedly bacteria are so important to a healthy digestive system that if after coming off a prescribed series of antibiotics,(which generally kill all forms of bacteria, including the ones that are necessary for our optimum biologic function), you then find yourself having 'bowel' problems, the easy fix is to just eat some yogurt, in that it contains the above-ref'd helpful bacteria and will 'eliminate' the problem.
To the overall question posed as to what works best to keep the tooth fairy at bay--
Brushing your teeth with baking soda is far and away the best technique to prevent dental decay.
The dentist will tell you, "Oh, no you shouldn't do that! It is too abrasive and will ruin the enamel of your teeth!"
Baloney! Such ignorant observation and warning is no more than a residual propaganda effect from many years ago when the toothpaste industry was overly promoting their recipe, (i.e. "Brush your teeth with our tooth paste. It will eliminate cavities") as they were concerned back then that people would opt instead for the proven and clearly effective regime of simply using baking soda instead. Dental caries can not thrive in a mouth/an environment where the ph balance is skewed to the negative. Bacteria needs an acid environment to propagate and if you brush your teeth with baking soda you will create an alkaline condition in your mouth that is so oppository to what is conducive to effective bacterial growth that the 'bugs' will simply not be able to maintain. I have used this method for over 30 years. Before that I had many, many, many cavities and made many, many, many trips to the 'wise' dentist. Since I stopped listening to the dentist and started brushing with baking soda I have had no cavities whatsoever and no, I repeat, no loss of enamel whatsoever. The solution to dental decay is right in your kitchen cabinet, (by the way, have you noticed the increasing tendency even as dentists continue to warn their patients not to brush with baking soda, for toothpaste companies to advertise an inclusion in their products of... "baking soda"?) Most all brands of toothpaste are largely chalk... chalk is abrasive, but then again so are dentists. Gary Engen/theloanarrangers at aol

The Brush, floss, calcium phosphate, and flouide are still the best tools. They have talked about a vaccine for years for the bugs that cause tooth decay. But nothing yet! It is how the bugs break down the sugar and processed carbs that become the acid. It isn't just the amount of sugar that leads to decay, it is the frequency....

BRUSH AT LEAST TWICE DAILY, ESPECIALLY AT BEDTIME, FLOSS DAILY AT BEDTIME, HAVE SIX-MONTH CHECK-UPS BY YOUR DENTIST, AND RINSE WITH SALTWATER WHENEVER YOU CAN(DON'T SWALLOW IT THOUGH). ALSO REMEMBER TO BRUSH YOUR TONGUE, THE DEBRIS THOSE PAPILLAE TRAP CAN BE A REAL SOURCE OF HALITOSIS(BAD BREATH). AND HAVE YOUR BLOOD SUGAR CHECKED AT LEAST YEARLY. DIABETES IS A PRIME CAUSE OF PERIODONTITIS AND TOOTH LOSS. KEEP SMILING.

And some floss probably wouldn't hurt either.
