This past Friday, Esther Snyder, who co-founded In-N-Out Burger with her husband Harry back in 1948, passed on to that great burger joint in the sky. She was 86.
For those of us in southern California, and to some extent, northern California, Nevada, and Arizona, In n Out is as much a symbol of southern California life as palm trees, rollerblades, yoga, and Hollywood. Who doesn't love the so-clean-it's-almost-sterile interior, the simple menu that makes decision-making easy, the quality beef, the fresh vegetables, and of course, screaming out "Animal-style!" into the speaker at the drive-thru? The fries leave something to be desired (personal taste), but that's okay. No one is perfect, you know, but In-n-Out comes damn near close.
Rest in peace, Esther Snyder.

They are marvelous - cut fresh at the counter and if you ask for "animal style", you can eat them with a fork. Those of us "in the know", carry that secret menu with us at all times so that we can order with or without the bun or even 5 patties high. Now, I hear the grand daughter who will not control the company wants to make lots of changes. Let's hope that she remembers from whence they came - that little burger stand in Baldwin Park (it is still there) and all it has become.
Have a burger on me, Esther.

Never golden brown (too much starch left on them from the fresh cutting). They bend in a "U" shape when you hold one, and that's completely unacceptable in my book. Just terrible. The burgers, again ... sublime.

I really hope this chain doesnt change. It'd be a terrible, terrible shame if it did.

I wasn't expecting the menu to be so simple and the place to be so packed! Everyday we went it was packed, inside and outside (the drive-thru). I can't remember which number I got but it was a burger "animal style" and it was awsome. Good stuff.

I think the only thing about the completely undistinguished burgers is you can get them with grilled onions and someone really should tell them that their fries need to be twice fried. I don't think there's a genuine cook anywhere who doesn't know that about fries....

Now that the grand daughter takes control, its only a matter of time til a franchise onslaught comes into effect, this is what her plan has been while grandma was alive, to sue her and take control in order to expand... in my opinion, franchising will ruin the freshness and quality will be a thing of the past, like most big chains that started out good, become bland and mediocre. SAD!
