Study: Blackberries, Concord grape juice, walnuts tops in antioxidants

Did you know that blackberries and artichoke hearts have higher antioxidant levels than chocolate, coffee, tea or red wine, for that matter? Me neither.

A recent study of 1,000 foods and beverages shows that the top five are blackberries, Welch's 100% Grape Juice, Ocean Mist artichoke hearts, walnuts and strawberries. These items beat out blueberries, red wine, chocolate, coffee and tea, all often cited for high levels of antioxidants. The real surprise to me was the artichoke hearts. Guess I'll have to start eating more antipasto.

The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Oslo, Norway, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and the University of Minnesota.

They are healthy but if you fill like indulging a bit...I steam them w/ black peppercorns, sliced onion and bay leaf (that's the healthy part) THEN, I take some bay shrimp, some capers, chives, a little fresh lemon juice and 'Best Foods' Yum ! mayonaise and mix up a little salad like dip to eat w/ my 'choke leaves, and if your lucky you'll get a shrimp in every bit. Enjoy!

Dip leaf-ends you pull off in melted healty margarine Benecol, Take Control etc.) with fresh lemon juice, discard rest of leaves, and when you get to the fuzzy choke, cut it out (the heart is underneath), cut the heart into bite-sized pieces and YUM. Artichokes are absolutely delicious.

Bottled or canned Artichokes hearts in olive oil are more caloric. Frozen or canned artichoke hearts are very low -- great on salads, steamed, stir fried are some of the ways I like them

Add about 6 few whole garlic cloves and boil for 30 min. After 30 min... take the garlic (will be soft) and smush it with a few tablespoons of mayo. Use the garlic mayo for dip. DELISH!

Cut off thorny end on all remaining leaves with scissors. Boil for like 20 min. or till stem is fork tender. Mix up melted butter, lemon juice, and alittle mayo. Dip choke end of leaf in and scrap off meat with teeth. Continue till down to choke. Using spoon scrape off choke hairs and the heart will be revealed. Eat plain or dipped in mixture or just salted. Sweet nutty taste. Chokes that have some dark splotches on outer leaves are the best, they have been through a spring chill. Don't discount ugly chokes alot of the time they are the best. Great eaten cold too. My family fights over them.

From the study's abstract:

"Results: Large variations in the content of antioxidants were observed in different foods and food categories. The food groups spices and herbs, nuts and seeds, berries, and fruit and vegetables all contained foods with very high antioxidant contents. Most food categories also contained products almost devoid of antioxidants. Of the 50 food products highest in antioxidant concentrations, 13 were spices, 8 were in the fruit and vegetables category, 5 were berries, 5 were chocolate-based, 5 were breakfast cereals, and 4 were nuts or seeds. On the basis of typical serving sizes, blackberries, walnuts, strawberries, artichokes, cranberries, brewed coffee, raspberries, pecans, blueberries, ground cloves, grape juice, and unsweetened baking chocolate were at the top of the ranked list."
