I felt sure I have mentioned this before... but I cant for the life of me find the post. But it is so interesting forgive me if it is a repeat.Scientists in Japan have created a robotic wine tasting machine. This clever little thing can detect 30 different varieties of grapes or blends of grapes. By analyzing wine in such a scientific way it is hoped retailers and customs can check that a wine is exactly what its label says it is. It can also report on where the grape originated from.
The wine-bot has been developed from the people in NEC's System Technologies laboratory and Mie University, both in Japan. In size it is about twice as large as a 3-litre wine box and consists of a microcomputer and an optical sensing instrument. For analysis, a 5 millilitre sample of wine is poured into a tray in front of the machine. Light emitting diodes then fire infrared light at the sample and the reflected light is sensed by an array of photodiodes.
By identifying the wavelengths of infrared light that have been absorbed by the sample, NEC says the wine-bot can correctly identify the unique organic components of 30 popular wines within 30 seconds.
I'm not sure if this picture is of the same bot; but its cute enough!
