Too many slicers

Not all single-purpose kitchen gadgets are useless, but slicers are getting out of control. There are slicers for avocados, tomatoes, eggs, butter and mozzarella, just to name a few from Williams-Sonoma. While the avocado slicer has a slightly different look, the other four have the exact same design in slightly different shapes. And you don't need any of them. All of those foods are exceptionally easy to slice through with a sharp knife and the scooping function of the avocado slicer can be replicated with a spoon.

If none of your knives can handle tasks like slicing tomatoes or hard-boiled eggs, you don't need a gadget. You need a new knife. Trust me - you'll get a lot more use out of it.

I use it about once a year, but whenever I do, it makes me happy that I have it since badly sliced eggs are so noticable. It is one of the few dumb kitchen gadgets that I've kept through the years.

I have to agree that it's time for a new knife if it can't do an avacado or tomato. In my experience, slicers typically chew those foods up.

I'm horrible at slicing things myself if its for presentation, they always come out uneven. When living at home, I'd use the cheese slicer simply because it was adjustable!

I LIKE my gadgets! They are so much FUN! However, Nicole is right as usual about not spending all your money on single-purpose gadgets.

Okay, I confess. I have an antique egg slicer that has been in the family for three generations. I have an antique corn sheller that came over from Germany with Great Grandpa Gunther (See the picture on the Pioneer Flour sack.) at the turn of the Twentieth century. I have a cheese slicer that my mother got with Velveeta Premium Points in 1955. Last but not least, I have a slicing guide that doubles as a cake cutter. I don't use most of them nowadays but I used to rely on them heavily.

Slice away and cook to your heart's content. If you like gadgets, it's your money to spend as you wish.

Egg slicers: You can pick these up for a quarter at yard sales or thrift shops. If you find a dud that squishes the egg instead of slicing it (also possible when paying full price for a new gadget), no big deal -- just get another.

Plus, as other commenters have noted -- FUN! I have fond childhood memories of "playing guitar" on my parents' egg slicer.
