Soaring Temperatures Change UK's Buying Habits

Wednesday was Britains hottest July day ever - as we sweltered the doom mongers crawlled out to proclaim massive loses in terms of productivity - trains running slower due to buckled lines making people late for work and the like.

More interesting is the change in general buying habits. Of course icecream sales rise. Unilever said sales were five times greater than last year with iced lolly brands, such as Solero and Calippo, flying out. Sainsbury's reported that on Tuesday alone sales of icecream were 117% higher than a year ago. Bottled water sales were up 27% in tesco and 80% in Sainsbury's. Salads, barbecue food such as sausages and burgers are all on the rise. Now is a good time to be a manufacturer of garden furniture and electrical fans.

The extra £3 million spent on wine and beer is another positive out come but is wiped out by a reduction of £8.8millon on other retail sales.
