There is nothing better than a steaming hot bowl of pho - clear, fragrant broth, slippery smooth rice noodles, and of course, the fresh onions, scallions, and whatever beef or chicken or pork you order on top.
But "steaming" hot? It's the dead of summer, and while the physiological cooling sensation of sweating while eating something extremely hot is nice and all, I'd rather eat something cold. Bun (pronounced "boon") is a great, cooler alternative to pho - it has the same thin rice noodles, fresh vegetables, but no boiling hot broth. It's basically like a rice salad, and with grilled meat on top, seems perfectly appropriate for a light summer meal.

And a durian milkshake. And Vietnamese espresso with sweetened condensed milk.
