A few years ago, Ben & Jerry's ice cream was sold to Unilever and the company dropped some of its social activist policies and programs. The spirit remained, but with the founders out of the game, very little non-ice cream action was undertaken. Recently, at the request of the company's new top executive, the "ageing hippie" founders have returned to work with the ice cream company and are leading a campaign that is spearheaded by their newest flavor, American Pie.
The ice cream is browns sugar and cinnamon flavored, witch chunks of apples and pie crust in it, capturing the spirit of an all-American dessert. On the carton, there are ways to get involved in the American Pie campaign, which is detailed at the Ben& Jerry's website. Their goal is to convince consumers to convince the government to change their spending priorities on issues such as education and insurance coverage.
The flavor sounds like it is one that will appeal to most ice cream (and pie) fans, but the question now is whether a love of ice cream will change anyone's political opinions - or if a difference in political opinion, or simply a desire not to have politics on ice cream packaging, will keep anyone from buying it.

Given the apple pie's role in the movie, it seemed like a funny choice. Where Rain Forest Crunch brings to mind it's charitable goal, this name didn't make me first think of altruism.
Did I dance around the topic enough?

Sounds like an interesting ice cream, but we've got local shops making plenty of tasty, interesting flavors who I don't have a problem supporting because they stick to what they're good at: making good ice cream.

You maybe able to afford more taxes, I can not.

If it's not exactly the same, it must be very similar to a variety they made a few years ago. I think it was called Apple Crumble. Anyway, I promptly bought some and it is sitting in my freezer, tempting me even through a closed door.

If they actually cared about insurance and education, they'd help start thier own group to help people with it, it doesn't require the government babysitting to help people. Lobbying the government is quite possibly the least you can do with an eye towards real change. If you call yourself a "libral" and care about people, then get off your butt and do something, stop crying for the government to do it for you.

When they were small businessmen sincerely trying to make a difference while treating both their employees and their customer fairly and making a superior product, they had a certain libertarian cachet. Now that they've sold out to unilever, less so.
I make my own ice cream, and no packaged stuff can ever be as good as your own fresh. Plus I can experiment and experience flavors like honeydew/ouzo, Guinness, chocolate banana with better chocolate and real bananas, and discover just how much melted Guittard chocolate you can actually put in a quart of half&half before it precipitates out and solidifies at the bottom of the churn.
(Twelve ounces, if anyone is interested, but it actually tastes better with only eight or nine.)

I just got back from serving in Iraq, and I think this ice cream is great! I wonder what all the "nay-sayers" have been doing for the past few months!
