Ants are a reality of any picnic, as all hard-core summer picnickers know. Can we beat them? Honestly, no.
So we may as well join them ... or at least, have them join us. Chef Jacques Martine offers a recipe for chocolate covered ants at chefdepot. Strictly for gourmands, his recipe demands real vanilla bean from Madagascar and is full of helpful hints. My favorite tips:
- "avoid red ants -- they're too spicy"
- "Take care not to smash [the ants]. They stay more flavorful and retain extra moisture if intact."
- "these make great dessert garnishes!"

Why would any civilized person want to eat a disgusting bug when there are much tastier and appetizing foods readily available?
I'm all for ridding the planet of our nemesis--the insects-- but eating them is plain gross! If we lived in a place where it was part of our culture to eat bugs, it would resemble sanity, but we don't. Maybe this chef should join the other lunatics on Fear Factor.

First of all, I got a laugh from this one this summer and the recipe is even funnier. I don't think the red ants are more spicy.

I honestly think that ants are delicious. They are full of protien and then with chocolate on them mmmmm... I had to eat plain ants when i was younger for a survival class and you would be surprized what they taste like.. the big black ones with small hairs on their back taste like Sour Patch Kids and the ones with out hair taste like a baked potato with butter. you just have to be carefull when eating them. you have to bite their heads off so they dont pinch you. Try some next time you are outside and see one crawling on the ground. you might be surprised.

Actually, I did eat ants once. Sweet ants. I grabbed a can of cashews from my cupboard, opened it and began munching as I was talking with my husband. I thought the cashews tasted funny, then noticed a ticlking on my arm. To my surprise I found a trail climbing from the can down my arm. The ant's were bitter sweet and oh so nasty. I'm sure, (and hope) this wouldn't be the kind used for a dessert. YUCK!

To the Chef who is covering Ants in chocolate for a culinary experience. Ants are highly intelligent and resourceful creatures, who are capable of feeling pain. Tragic that you are so cruel. Our family has chosen vegetarian because of the inhumane and barbaric treatment of animals in the slaughtering process. By covering ants with chocolate, they suffocate and this is a cruel and inhumane treatment.
