Magnolia Cupcakes doesn't deliver

magnolia cupcakesOr at least, I don't think they do.

But that is beside the point because a couple of friends of mine who recently made a trip to the East Coast from LA brought four perfectly perfect little cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery back to me. I love cupcakes, but have been disappointed by some of the bakeries' offerings in LA. I finally got to try the ones from the bakery that almost started the cupcake frenzy a few years ago.

The cupcakes were basic - just permutations of chocolate and vanilla: vanilla cupcake with chocolate frosting, vanilla cupcake with vanilla frosting, chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting, and chocolate cupcake with vanilla frosting. Is it bad that I ate two of them in one sitting? And one in another sitting that was about 30 minutes later? I shared the fourth one.

They were delicious, which is surprising, since they made quite a long haul across the United States. The cakes were tender and just slightly sweet, perfectly balanced with the sweeter, but not overly sugary, frosting. I appreciated that the cupcakes weren't over the top with frosting, which seems to be the reason that I don't love Sprinkles in Beverly Hills.

The cake part was just ok, but I doubt I will be going back anytime soon, and when I do, it will be with a jug of milk.
