Izakaya gaining ground on sushi in LA

musha yakitoriThe ' writer Jennifer Steinhauer visits Los Angeles and notices that while sushi is the king of Japanese cuisine in the West coast city, izakaya is gaining considerable ground. Izakaya is a style of dining on small plates like tempura, simmered dishes called nimono and grilled dishes like yakitori skewers that are usually in the shadow of the more important task at hand, drinking.

While there is an official Little Tokyo in Los Angeles, with many izakaya restaurants like Izakaya Haru Ulala, there is a considerable population of Japanese people on LA's westwide. Steinhauer visits Musha in Santa Monica (there is also a location in Torrance, and possibly another location opening somewhere in LA). She also visits Orris on Sawtelle in West LA, and Torafuku.

There's been a great Izakaya(appropriately named, "Izakaya")near Downtown San Jose, CA for years, and I'm sure that there have been plenty others out there. Well, if it helps new folks find good food, all the better.
