In a small ice cream parlor along NC 55 in Angier, North Carolina, the hottest, and we really do mean "hottest" flavor is called Cold Sweat.
Sunni Sky's owner, Scott Wilson, has created an ice cream with the milk, sugar and the other usual ingredients, but also includes three kinds of peppers and two kinds of hot sauce: Dave's Insanity Hot Sauce, Blair's Megadeath Hot Sauce, chile peppers, habaneros and Thai chiles. One of the ice cream shop's regular customers was a taste tester. He said it tasted like "fire -- with a side of fire."
Not sure what the draw is to something that is painful going in, and will likely be painful coming out. However, I am guessing that it's refreshing on a very hot summer's day. Ice cream is cool, and sweating (from the peppers and hot sauce), as we know, has a cooling effect as well.
I'd rather turn on the A/C.

This sounds pretty gross, only because of the mix of hot sauce and vanilla. But there's nothing inherently wrong with spicy and sweet together. The Dreamery used to make a flavor that was had swirls of chocolate-chile fudge and chile-coated nuts. The fudge sauce had a great deep, spicy flavor, not unlike a good mole sauce, only sweeter. I haven't seen it in stores lately , but it was delicious. Also, at the local chile festival, jalapeno-chocolate ice cream is available. It's not the best, but it's still pretty good.
I think maybe the problem with Wilson's ice cream is the hot sauce. There's all kinds of ingredients like vinegar in hot sauces that make a terrible mix with cream. No wonder it turns stomachs.

I'm with you on the A/C, Sarah.
I used to make spicy cinnamon ice cream. I used cinamon oil for a smooth texture. A few people claimed it was hot tasting but most just gobbled it up. The habaneros would definitely turn me off Cold Sweat absolutely.

There is a small homemade icecream place in the North Market in Columbus, Ohio, called Jeni's Ice Creams where they make the most delicious flavor combinations in the world: Lime Cardamom yYogurt, Lavender Blueberry, Gravel Road (salted caramel ice cream with smoked almonds) and two flavors that have chile in them that are to die for.
The first is called Queen City Cayenne, and it is a mixture of Belgian chocolate with a tiny hint of cinnamon and dried, ground cayenne chile. The first flavor to hit is the chocolate, the next is the cinnamon, and then, bringing up the rear in a slow burn is the chile. Amazingly good.
The other is Thai Chile--a mixture of peanut butter and coconut milk with toasted coconut and chile. Another slow burner with amazing flavor. That one is great paired with the Lime Cardamom--refreshing and cooling.

I am not surprised someone finally thought of this. In India in Mumbai where they make icecream from all types of fruits I had tasted the green chilli icecream which was spectacular no vanilla just a few drops of green chillie juice. Was superb.

This sounds worth trying, but really gross in a wild kind of way. I'd call it a 'yuk-um' -- bad at first taste (yuk) and a good after taste (mmmm).

It's like some of those made-up flavors you hear at a party or on TV (examples - Pork, Onion, and Beef Jerky ice cream). However, in 1969, Baskin-Robbins tried to market a new flavor, Ketchup ice cream. It actually made it to the test-market stage before common sense roared in and stopped the atrocity. Rumor has it that this is the only Baskin-Robbins' receipe that has been destroyed by burning.

i think that sounds pretty nasty....the whole reason for ice cream is the yummy sweetness! why add hot sauce? it makes no sense! it totally ruins the point of ice cream.
