Slashfood Ate (8): Best meals for the morning after

meals for the morning after

Some may think of Mardi Gras, St. Patrick's Day, and Cinco de Mayo when they think of "drinking holidays." But don't discount the Fourth of July. When you're out there on the lawn being shocked and awed by the fireworks, you may not be paying attention to the five margaritas you just drank. Oh boy. You are going to be hurting the morning after.

Some say the best way to cure a hangover is to drink more. Others say it takes two tylenol and cup of coffee. Whatever you do to "cure," you still have to eat something, even if the thought of it makes your stomach turn. Here are my top eight picks for what to eat "the morning after." Or afternoon, as it were.

  1. Bacon and eggs at the closest diner - Or perhaps it's sausage and eggs. Better yet, make it all three. Whichever it it, the dish will give you protein, and more importantly, the grease will help. Who knows why. Just use it as an excuse to eat bacon and sausage.
  2. Benito's nachos - We'd like to think that you've gone home, tried to sleep, and woke up at 10 am on the "morning after," but hey, if it's an all night rager and breakfast is at 4 a.m., Benito's Taco Shop in LA is open 24 hours. Lots of options, but the nachos are easy to share, and again, same principle as #1. Grease.
  3. Jamba Juice - Oh boy. You are dehydrated. You screamed so loud and talked so much that your jaw hurts. The best thing to do is have a smoothie - hydrating and no chewing required. The flavor is up to you, but something off the "secret menu" couldn't hurt.
  4. Pancakes from the same diner as #1 - Maybe your diner-style breakfast isn't bacon and eggs. Pancakes work well, too. Carbs are our friends. They make us happy. And syrup? Well that's like a liquid dose of happiness. Besides something about pancakes makes me think that they are sponges soaking up all the evil alcohol.
  5. Pho from anywhere you can find it - The broth is hydrating and rich with whatever nutrients came out of the beef that was cooked in it. The noodles go down easy. And since alcohol numbs even your taste senses, a good, generous shot of sriracha will perk you up.
  6. Bloody Mary, you lush - Well, if it's true that the best cure for a hangover is another drink, then a Bloody Mary has got you covered. Like a Jamba Juice smoothie, it's liquid, and it even has tomato juice, which is healthy, along with some roughage in the celery.
  7. Instant ramen at home - It's the same, rehydrating, salty concept at #5 Pho. However, you don't have to go anywhere. You don't have to do anything. Just add water and nuke it. Of course, you'll be in a sodium-bloated paradise the next day.
  8. This one's for you. What's your food remedy for that queasy, headachy and not-so-fresh feeling?

Anything carb-y helps too because you can end up on a sugar low or crash after all the alcohol drinking (it spikes while drinking then drops).

Morning after cure? Sleep. Then a cheeseburger.

Seconding the water/gatorade, but for those absolutely crushing evenings which seem to pop up immediately prior to exams, there's nothing better than a massive, greasy, donair. Low-grade fatty meat, heavily spiced and then slathered in a very sugary cream sauce with heapings of dubiously-fresh onions and tomatos piled on top, and then wrapped in a bloated piece of pita bread. It's huge: doughy, fatty, sugary, and greasy, all in a form factor which even my newly-lowered IQ can handle. They are truly god's gift to the drunkard. I still haven't found one worth a damn out in the west.

Lots of coffee, lots of water, dry toast, and maybe some warm broth if I'm feeling up to it. Maybe a bit of culinary self-denial does me some moral good after too much liquid self-indulgence.

That said, there is an east Asian drink in a can called variously "white gourd" drink, or juice, or "winter melon" drink or juice, or some such. It is perfect for hangovers, as it soothes the stomach instantly, as in instantly instantly, as soon as it hits your stomach. It also cools the body within a few minutes, and is fortified with sugar so it gets you going long enough to make coffee.

You can also get the same "winter melon" (not bitter melon) with beef and black bean sauce, which is both nutritious and balancing for the body, and can be reheated or eaten cold, with rice.

Ginseng is warming, but is pretty energising and will help your body repair itself.

The best way to deal with a hangover is to eat plenty of nutritious food the night before while you are out drinking. Any of the previous posters' suggestions will do. Go to Dennys or someplace similar and give the staff something to talk about the next day. And water. Lots of water. That way you don't have much of a hangover at all, and you can take the percodan (and maybe it's brother, too) and really enjoy it.

Oh, and apples. They are easy on the stomach, have bulk and carbs, and lots of micronutrients. People that eat an apple each day see a doctor thirty to forty percent less than people who don't. I eat three a day, and figure I'll never die.

The next day: Mexican food - a good choice might be huevos rancheros with pork and salsa verde and refried beans. Enough grease to anchor the stomach. No coffee - go back to bed! When you wake up you'll be tired, but nothing will hurt.

Well id suggest, drinking lots and lots of water, and eating lots of crackers, or anything else that is mainly starch, and then induce vommiting, repeat process two or three times, and you'll feel as good as new. This is to Jim from Holland, you said if your drunk properly you'll be up every four hours? Have you ever drank heavy; if you have drank proper, you won't move til the next morning or even the next night; however the times fall

But since it is already mentioned i think it is worth me pointing out that if you live in seattle (like i do) there is a restaurant called shorties which does a hangover special. This special is about $6 and consists of a cocktail, an asprin, a hotdog and a cigarette.

TAKE A FEW HITS OF IT AND YOU WILL BE AS GOOD AS NEW.
THERE IS NOTHING BETTER, THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT NOT TOO MANY PEOPLE HAVE ACCESS TO IT.
IF YOU ARE A DRINKER OR YOU WNAT TO MAKE YOUR GUESTS THAT ARE SLEEPING OVER FEEL GREAT THE NEXT MORNING GET A SMALL CANISTER, YOU WON'T BE SORRY AND IT'S ALWAYS GOOD TO HAVE IN AN EMERGENCY.

What worked for me, after consuming mass quantities of tequila one night, was sharing a dozen raw oysters with a friend and then later a large glass of orange juice right before bed. Protein and vitamin C seems to do the trick! Woke up with a clear head....
