How do the new summer Starbucks blends stack up?

I discussed the release of Starbucks' new summer tea-based drinks a few weeks ago, but they were officially introduced to stores over the past couple of days. The Pomegranate and Tangerine Frappuccinos offer a lighter, more refreshing taste of summer. Since Starbucks is now the target of criticism from the consumer watchdog group CSPI for offering fattening drinks on the menu, I thought it would be interesting to see how the new tea blendeds stack up compared to a couple of the standard frappuccinos.
  • Pomegranate Frappuccino® Juice Blend (grande): 280 cal, 5 gm fat
  • Tangerine Frappuccino® Juice Blend (grande): 190 cal, 0 gm fat
  • Coffee Light Frappuccino® (grande, no whip): 150 calories, 1 gm fat
  • Coffee Frappuccino® (grande, no whip): 260 calories, 3.5 gm fat
  • Mocha Frappuccino® (grande, no whip): 290 calories, 4 gm fat
  • Mocha Frappuccino® (grande, with whip): 420 calories, 16 gm fat

The Tangerine and the Light frappuccinos are the best choices for those who are really trying to stay in shape for swimsuit season, but the biggest thing to avoid is whipped cream. Save that for a special treat and you can enjoy the rest of your favorite drinks almost any time. Full Starbucks nutritional information can be found here.

By the way, the Tangerine flavor is pretty good. It has a hint of lime and is very refreshing, especially with the high temperatures we've been getting out here in Southern California. Has anyone tried the Pomegranate yet?

She is aware that I don't drink a lot of sweet stuff. She told me, Don't worry, it's natural, unsweetened. Hello! Wait until I show her your report.

There was more citrus taste in the drink than I had anticipated. The red flavoring was more akin to a watered down cranberry taste. I wil have to taste the tangerine, just to decided if they made the drink in a pre-used blender.

The pomengranate is almost certainly a blend of cheap juices primarily, such as orange, grape, and apple. It probably only has a smidge of actual pomengranate juice in it.

i liked the pomegranate. i'm disappointed to see so many calories, but that's my "once-a-week" treat from there. i found the tangerine to be too orange-y. *shrug*

My wife really liked the tangerine and I really liked the pomegranate. Both were refreshing and we had them w/o cream. I won't buy one on a regular basis. My favorite is white chocolate mocha - I am ADDICTED TO IT!

Take a cup (8oz) of any basic fruit juice(not a sugared drink), add either some pieces of banana, strawberry, blueberry, blackberry, raspberry...any or all, add them all to a blender, add 1/2 cup non-fat cream, and about 8 ice cubes...BLEND for a couple of minutes....and you have a great, healthy, fat free drink - 10x better and healthier than Starbucks!! If you need the "whipped cream" on the top -- get the fat free Cool Whip to top it off.

I had the Pomegranate drink the other day, without whip cream is ALWAYS the way to go, I totally agree with one of the previous posters...it leaves a weird fat film on the roof of your mouth and it adds like 180 more calories to your drink. The pomegranate was a strange flavor, that I had never tasted...I wouldn'say it was horrible...but I don't see myself purchasing it again. I plan to order a tangerine frap today and see whether I like it. My favorite is the Peppermint "Tuxedo" Mocha (it's got the white mocha and the dark chocolate syrup in it" mmmmmmmmm....and you can get ANY of starbucks specialty coffe drinks on ice, which is nice for the summer.

They didnt make the menu for you thats like going to a fast food restaurant and saying you want a fat free cheeseburger. Also if you watching your figure than go somewhere else like to your sink for water.

I agree wholeheartedly with Jill about making your own from your kitchen...I was out last weekend with my 14 year old daughter she said...Mom lets go to starbucks and get a frappuccino...I suggested we make our own ..she looked at me in disbelief... but I prevailed..now she begs for me to make her more.... how wonderful ...that I convinced my teenaged daughter something I have been doing for years..
