Not so secret Safeway

I don't even live in America but I found this article (in PDF format) by Ursula Gross fascinating and a great read.

Apparently they have so many Safeway stores in Washington that each has been unofficially named by the cities inhabitants. So you have super-secret-safeway hidden behind a school and not-so-safeway in, what I can only guess, is a none-to neighbourly neighbourhood. I can see this habit of naming stores taking off in the UK as some towns are now so saturated with a certian supermarket chain that no other competitor actually remains in the town!

You mean not everyone does this?

In Atlanta we have a lot of Kroger stores.

Krogay == Kroger in Midtown on Monroe, the heart of gay Atlanta

Disco Kroger == Kroger in Buckhead, near all the nightclubs/bars

Ghetto Kroger == The Kroger on Moreland Avenue south of East Atlanta Village (since closed and reopened as a much nicer store)

Of course I also refer to Publix as "Pube-Licks", so I may just be weird.

Here in SF, we have 2 well-known "Squiffy's":

- Castro Safeway (safegay, if you will)
- Singles Safeway (in the Marina)

Near my parents', there are three (!) Ralph's within 3 miles of each other. Two fo them are across the street. There's Ghetto Ralph's, Nice Ralph's and Evil Ralph's.
