Sounds terrible - an ice cream made from fish, but it could make an ice cream that won't pile on the pounds as you eat.
The Times has a report that Unilever, which produces Wall's, Magnums, Carte D'Or and Ben and Jerry's ice cream has applied to the UK's Food Standards Agency for permission to use a fish protein in a range of ice creams and fruit ices. The North Atlantic Pout is an eel-like fish whose blood, using GM technology, has been made into a protein that will cut the fat and calories in ice cream.
If accepted it could be 2008 before the protein appears in products.
Despite the fact that the technology leaves no edible traces of GM material in the finished product - rather like the use of vegetarian rennet in cheese the use of a GM product has been criticized by many as a "stealth" way to introduce a GM product.

For those who have watched the original (Asian) edition of "Iron Chef," fish and ice cream will not seem like an unlikely combination. Even octopus has been used to make ice cream!

It's fairly simple to see why something like Eeel Ice Cream would be slimmimg: you would eat far less of it!

And what about the people who cannot have fish? This sounds OK for me as long as not all ice cream has fish in it.
Just like me I can't eat wheat so that makes it hard for me to eat anything. Every restaurant put flour on and in everything they make just about anymore. Its even in simple seasoning.
Just as long as they keep the medical conditions in mind. I'm OK with it. BUT I wont be eating it. LOL

I would like to say that I have offically have seen it all. We are now thinking about making ice cream with part of eels... what is next making it from humans or something? If we do this has everyone thought of there being no eels left, because we are killing them off? Has anyone at all thought about this!!!! I guess not. I think this is a bad idea... and if people don't want to get fat... don't eat ice cream and just deal.

I only have one thing to say....ewwwwwwwwwww! Ok, who in their right mind would even consider this?? Ice cream is meant to be fattening. There is already the 1/2 cal, sugar free, and god only knows what else. I can understand the concern for the weight thing but ice cream is meant to indulge and enjoy not wondering if your gonna vomit when you open up eel ice cream and the smell of fish knocks you on your ass. If you don't want to gain the weight there are things out there like sherbert and italian ice. Leave the eels alone people, get a new hobby.

We Americans are culturally biase---cnditioned to eating ice cream made from cow proteins only. Why not vary the menu? Why not consider the healthy alternatives? If it is ice cream it will, most likely, taste like what we know.

Come on people. All over the world people eat things like spiders, crickets, snails, liver - other people. I say go for it. Worse case scenario, it's awful and I stick to the soy stuff. Best case, I get to indulge, lose weight and lower my bad cholesterol all at the same time. And I highly doubt were going to kill off the world's population of eel. We still have cows, chickens, shrimp, fish, lobster, pigs - it's called farming.

Hmm.. It will be interesting to try. I have been overweight almost all of my adult life. I've tried almost every diet out there! I am looking forward to seeing if this will help.

Did everybody miss the part in the article that said it doesn't leave any taste and doesn't smell - that it's changed into a protein. They even used the word "stealth" to describe putting it in.
It's not the flavor of the ice cream .. it's just an additive.

That sounds gross to me.... but honestly, I could care less what they do, as long as they don't change ALL ice cream into "eel manufactured ice cream"! They need to have a separate market, for those people who DO want to eat that.... like how they have "Sugar Free," "1/2 Cal," and all those other types LABELED. So, they can have their own section.. "Eel Protein"! But let those who want to stick to the NORMAL ice cream do so!

It's not Soylent Green, there will be plenty of eel still, and the product may be quite flavorful.

Absolutely not! I don't think I can psychologically get past the fact it is 'fish.' With so many other variaties of 'diet' ice cream (no sugar, light etc.) why would you want to consider this option?

What concerns me the most is that the protein is made from the blood of the eel. We are using the blood of other animals to modify our own bodies. It's scary how so much of our food is already GM.

The sound of ice cream and fish just sounds awful, but it is worth a try. Someone said if you don't want to get fat, don't eat and deal with it. It is not always that easy !! I had gastric bypass surgery done 3 years ago, lost 225 pounds, and have gained 25 of it back. I am OCD ( Obsessive, Compulsive, Disorder ) and food is my problem. It is my comfort, in a very emotionaly abusive life, from age 5 til present. ( 52 ) You are thinking, "do something about it if it is so bad", and I would if it were possible. I hope the ice cream is a hit.
