New York City Councilman Joel Rivera is proposing a radical solution to the "obesity epidemic." Specifically, he wants to enact new zoning laws that limit the number of fast food venues that can be built in a specific area. Low-income neighborhoods, which Rivera said have the greatest concentration of fast food restaurants, could be particularly affected under Rivera's plan, which he plans to hold hearings on. He seems to feel that the easy availability of fast food due to the sheer number of restaurants was the biggest contributing factor to the fact that roughly half of all New Yorkers are overweight.
A professor of urban policy and planning at NYU offered a reassuring voice of reason, noting that such laws could not be applied or enforced because they couldn't distinguish between different types of fast food. In New York, a city that is perpetually on the go, far more than pizza and burgers can be considered fast food.

For better or for worse, we should all decide for ourselves what we eat, without the government trying to push us to eat what they want us to eat. We're losing more and more freedoms every day, and the government can't stay out of even our simplest choices.

Some of Todays politicians should stop praticing Communism, RUSSIA is getting more free, and we just watch our freedom fly away. Whats next, we all know that we all need a good night sleep, maybe we are not responsible enought to do this on a regular basis. Maybe Councilman Rivera will enact a new zoning law to have all lights out by 9:00 pm in all Residential areas. Oh, sorry, probaly just gave him a new issue. Here is an idea for him, that all of us would agree on. TAXES, they Really stress us americans out, Doctors say stress is not healthy, most likely could cause a short lived life span. SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD ISSUE FOR SOMEBODY TO ADDRESS. WE and Mr. Rivera would both be happy then, he would be ticked pink that im going to live longer and we would be happy to have little Extra CASH in our pockets. Signed, LITTLE guy who would like to eat with both HANDS someday.

The family has become reliant on these resteraunts, and forgetting that family time is at the table with a nice prepared dinner. We have all taken the ROLE as a CUSTOMER to far, we need to learn how to do things for ourselves, like cook for our families. I am all for it!!! SOOO, if you are against it, then quit worrying about the way others look because they are eating at resteraunts, don't like what I say? Tough it is a free country. :) Good day.

Many people and kids go for the fast foods because they do not believe that they are hurting themselves and down the line costing taxpayers money because we are paying for their healthcare! For those of you who wrote that is is not fair to limit these fast food restaurants from being built (it has nothing to do with what exists now)Hello taxpayers, WAKE UP!!!!

If the government, a system of regulation, has an idea of how we can REGULATE places where the poor and less educated could very well make bad choices, why not do it?
When people get healthcare, whether it is free healthcare provided by the taxpayers or private healthcare (ultimately sharing the cost across the board to others who have healthcare or pay for it such as corporate USA) the cost gets placed back to ? YOU GUESSED IT!!! THE TAXPAYERS.
As a taxpaying citizen, I feel it is a SMART thing for the government to regulate Fast Food Restaurants.
This is our government trying to help all of us!
