Yesterday, The Fanatic Cook featured a good post with some highlights from a large-scale, bottled-water analysis done by the National Resources Defense Council a few years ago. One of the better details that TFC pulled from the report was how a bottled water called Spring Water, labeled with a majestic mountain lake, was actually sourced from an industrial parking lot next to a hazardous waste site. Fun, and probably not that uncommon. TFC also points out this handy chart with comparisons of tests run on hundreds of different bottled waters to check their levels of arsenic, fluoride, etc.

Group A drinks bottled to get away from tap and group B drinks tap because bottled isn't what it claims to be. Me, on the other hand, I drink both. Bottled water is cheaper than most sodas and it does taste better to me.

That being said, I also purchase regular bottled water - why? cuz I live in a place with crappy water - like others were saying. I've lived in places were the tap water was good and didn't have a problem drinking it than but I won't where I currently live.
Not only that, as someone who likes to use all kinds of powdered drink stuff, bottled watter is perfect for that. You take a few sips out, dump in your poweder of choice, shake, drink, and throw in the recycling. Nice, neat easy!!!

Buying from a state that isn't surrounded by water is a bad choice, but to buy bottled water that is processed by companies that are surrounded by mountains and fresh water lakes is a good choice. If you want good drinking water read the label first before drinking it, because you can be drinking the hudson river water and is processed in New Jersey.

Bathing in it reminds me of being in a swimming pool because of the high content of chlorine (sp?) in it. Fortunately now our property has a well with great water, our friends come to fill up bottles of our water for their consumption. Even my disabled autistic son who needs a home lunch each day is provided with our home well water to drink, as he will not drink the city water. What does he know???Even while he was attending sp. ed. schools I provided him with his own drinking water from home.
Water will eventually be what wars will be about, we will not be fighting for oil, but water. Whoever has the better water will have power over all!

I just wish I had thought of it first...I could have hooked the old garden hose up to the bottles and I would have made a fortune!

It is funny to think that tap water is just as good as a quality bottled water, when one sees the amount of chlorine and flouride that goes into tap water you should think twice about drinking it. Both of these chemicals are dangerous to the body, expecially over the long term. But hey our Government says it is ok, so I guess it is, cuz they would never lie to us!!!!!!!

Personally, I don't find the results of this testing of bottled waters at all surprising.
Bottled water sells because the containers are damn convenient.

Freezing water bottles is not a good idea because it will release toxins from plastic into the water you will drink! just as toxins are released into foods when they are microwaved in plastic wrap or plastic containers, check out www.eniva.com use id#137315 to get more info!

6-29-2006 @1:17AM Dorothy said... As someone who has lived in several different areas of Florida, I can tell you there is a vast amount of difference in the water in different places! The first Florida water I ever had to drink (and shower in by the way, which still makes me shudder)was sulphur water. You talk about NASTY!!! You could drink it if it was ice cold (and you drank really fast), but smelling HOT sulphur water still makes me gag. Then in north central Florida, we had a deep well in an area of limerock, and it was the best water I've ever had. Now we live in a major metropolitan area and our water often tastes and smells like chlorine. I read recently that we should stay away from SPLENDA sweetner because is has been chlorinated in the manufacturing process. This makes it worse than city water how exactly??? My personal opinion is that if you can "taste" the water, there is a problem.

(clay red in color). it changed my mind for good. i'll stick with the tap where the water is transparent and clear, not something that looks like it's been sitting in a swimming pool for a couple of years without maintenance before they dump the chemicals in it to make it "clear and refreshing". c'mon people.... think about what you are putting in your bodies. CHLORINE!!!!!

Taste is probably the major factor in why people choose bottled over tap, especially in certain metropolitan areas (and some small burgs a la the one mentioned above from "Erin Brockovich"), but even in metro areas where the water runs RELATIVELY clean, there is the additional concern of individual households whose piping may be aged, leaching heavy metals (e.g. LEAD) and other chemicals into the home's water supply.
In addition, several strains of giardia protozoa have been found in relative abundance in tap water and in far greater amounts in well, stream and other "natural" sources of water.
BTW, I was raised on bottled water from birth. My family, until recently, subscribed to Arrowhead, so there was little to no bottle waste from water in our house. Even now, we reuse our bottles as often as we can and recycle those that we don't. As far as cost, we don't buy those little 8-, 16-, 20-, or 32-ounce bottles except in a pinch -- generally, we buy gallon bottles (at no more than $1.69 each AT MOST) to keep in the car so we won't HAVE to buy water that's more expensive than gas.
