Bottled water report

Yesterday, The Fanatic Cook featured a good post with some highlights from a large-scale, bottled-water analysis done by the National Resources Defense Council a few years ago. One of the better details that TFC pulled from the report was how a bottled water called Spring Water, labeled with a majestic mountain lake, was actually sourced from an industrial parking lot next to a hazardous waste site. Fun, and probably not that uncommon. TFC also points out this handy chart with comparisons of tests run on hundreds of different bottled waters to check their levels of arsenic, fluoride, etc.

What's the secret? Everyone complains about gas dollars but none mention water? Under the sink filtration water filters are available everywhere, just fill a jug and park it in the refriderator. Fill your smaller bottles and take them to wherever you travel.
You cannot do that with gas. Starbucks has crying towels for a 12oz cup of coffee that might have bought two gallons of gas or more.
I laugh everytime I see someone at a convenience store buying less than $3.00 for regular gas. If they squeeze the hose, they might get another quart?

They spend hard earned money on water that is no better than tap water, and toss the plastic, non-degradable bollle in the trash can.

I hear people complain about the gas prices, or how they are sooooo broke...because of this or that.. and the economy and what not.. but will go into a store and pay 2.29 for a bottle of water.. are you serious?! It's amazing.. especially since I've tried many waters.. and I think that they all taste pretty much the same.. like dirty toilet water.. ..(I asked my cat.. that's how I know..) I hear of people who swear by Fiji water.. I hate to tell you but if you boil some water on your stove, and let it sit, and then pour it into an old pepsi bottle or container and stick it in the freezer, when it melts it tastes exactly the same!! So instead of turning in your bottle for 5 cents.. you just saved yourself 2.29... ... think about that.. ~*M*~

I have a filter on the refrigerator and I refill them and use them until the bottle is so out of shape it will not stand alone. I often leave my bottled water, or whatever else I might be drinking, at various places I visit. I would rather lose a bottle of water than an expensive container I used to carry. Not all users of bottled water are paying a high price for bottled water. I will probably spend about $6 a year on bottled water. Should we compare that to gas guzzler vehicles - Motorhomes often get less than 6 miles a gallon. Or what about the cost of any bottled or canned drink at most places - $3 or more at a lot of places. My 20 cent bottle of water seems to be a good buy when compared to other beverages and better for me, too.

What a lot of people don't realize is the fact that OZARKA and other water bottling plants are taking water from wells that will eventually, collapse a water table, leaving many people who live in the country without a source of water! OZARKA has two wells within ten or fifteen miles of our farm and they were only going to pump them during daylight hours, five days a week. Instead, they pump 24 hours a day, seven days a week! All so people can have bottled water! Our roads are continually under repair because their large trucks destroy them! Trust me, you would save a ton of money filling your own bottles at home! Our tax dollars could be better spent than on repairing the roads that Ozarka rips up! The whole idea of selling bottled water is ridiculous!

Bottled water is very convenient for most people who are on the go, the comments of "people being ignorant to purchase bottled water when there is a faucet" is not why most people buy it, its so much easier to just open a frig and have a nice crisp cold bottle of water waiting for you, or on your lunch hour going to the store, just "grab and go", more clean and easier to have bottled water when you are camping to...I find it very unhealthy pouring water from a faucet in a glass and then putting in ice, the reports on ice and how they handle it is very unsanatary, where a bottle of water is more sanatary, and you can freeze the water right in the bottle it came from...bottled water is the way to go, in my opinion.

This news isnt really news to me... do you honestly believe h20 is going to be "fresh" if it came from a mountain? That snow is just water that was dumped out by a cloud, and a cloud probably isnt an efficient filter.

It's not really a health matter all the time. While tested safe, it really tastes pretty putrid in many areas, including my town. Maybe I'm spoiled because I grew up drinking the delicious NYC water, but I really can't stand the taste here, even after 16 years. :)

WATER CAN NOT BE LABELED DISTILLED UNLESS IT IS. THAT IS THE LAW. BECAUSE OF THE PROCESS THE WATER IS 99.9% PURE. ALL BATTERY ACID, WASTE MATERIALS ETC. IS ELIMATED. I BOUGHT A DISTILLER ONLINE FOR $100.00 AND MAKE MY OWN WATER AND ICE CUBES. YOU SHOULD SEE THE GUNK IN THE DISTILLER AFTER MAKING 1 GALL0N OF WATER. THE PROOF IS WHEN YOU CAN MAKE AN ICE CUBE IN A TRAY THAT YOU CAN SEE THRU PERFECTLY CLEAR, YOU HAVE GREAT WATER. GO AHEAD AND LOOK AT YOUR ICE CUBES THEN BUY A DISTILLER. I HAVE TWO NOW AND THEY SEEM TO LAST 1 1/2 YEARS. IT TAKES 6 HOURS TO MAKE A GALLON OF WATER PER DISTILLER.

I lived in Albany NY for years and the water was delicious but have moved to the suburbs and the water is so highly chlorined that I can't get it past my nose so I have started drinking Pellagrino. It is delicious and not cheap but I drink it when I want water. I drink it because I like the little sparkle in it but I only drink it when I am home...do not carry it around with me.

The folks I was visiting have grown used to it I suppose, but I went to the local Wal-Mart and bought a DELICIOUS TASTELESS gallon of spring water for 64 cents... Best 64 cents I ever spent!

I'm in FL now, can't stand the taste of tap water here. Tried the filter, ends up sitting in my fridge because we just don't drink it. I even have to get drinks in a restaurant without ice here because it makes the drink taste funny as it begins to melt. If I didn't buy bottled water, I'd never drink it, period. Tried it, over and over, and just didn't drink as much water because I can't enjoy it. When the bottled water popularity picked up I was in NY and used to wonder who the heck would pay for water when they could get it for free? Ha! No more. I'd rather buy water that I enjoy & drink it than pay for most of the sugar-riddled chemical junk soft-drinks.
