Silicone basting brushes are great for BBQs

I have had mixed feelings about silicone kitchen supplies in the past, but generally, I think it only makes unsatisfying bakeware and great tools - especially outdoor tools. In this case, I'm talking about silicone basting brushes. Once I got one last summer, I didn't want to go back to a regular bristled brush.

The silicone brushes are ideal for use in grilling because they are heat resistant and durable. You can spread on any amount of sauce or glaze without having to worry about the brush drying out or charring due to heat and, best of all, you'll never have a bristle come loose onto your food. They are also dishwasher safe, which makes cleanup a breeze. I use a short handled one most of the time, which works very well, but the serious griller might be more interested in long-handled versions, like the Grill Friends Angled BBQ Brush or BBQ Basting Mop.

I'm too bootleg for that. I usually just squirt the sauce in a zig-zag all over the food then spread it around with a spork.

6-22-2006 @1:18AM Andrew said... I've heard silicone is also commendable because it doesn't pick up odors very easily. This is a problem with traditional basting brushes. A traditional brush used for barbeque, for example, shouldn't be used to apply an egg glaze to something baked unless you're willing to risk it smelling slightly of sauce.

But my point might be moot; silicone bristles might be too coarse for such applications.

6-22-2006 @7:54AM Nicole Weston said... Silicone bristles are very, very soft. In fact, "bristle" is probably the wrong word for them because they are not stiff at all, but no better word springs to mind.
I wouldn't worry about stiffness being a factor with these, unlike most standard brushes.

I discovered this very thing two days ago when i was basting some chicken with barbecue sauce and couldn't find my old standard brush that I reserve for stinky garlicky applications. Silicone brushes are fantastic for applying thick goopy sauces at the last minute. They don't absorb all the sauce you're trying to apply, they spread everything thinly and evenly ... and while you're waiting, you can make the little bristles look like a little hula dancer in a grass skirt by jiggling the brush to and fro... before you've applied the sauce of course.
