Carb-BOOM!

Every single day when I get off work, my life can be summarized by three distinct phrases: Tired. No energy. Offended by the Atkins diet.

What's a girl to do if she wants to make the local 6 p.m. bike ride with the boys?

Carb-BOOM! may just provide an answer. With quite possibly the greatest name ever to grace a sports-food product, Carb-BOOM! is a vegan sports gel that strikes fear into South Beach Diet-devotees everywhere.

Vanilla-Orange and Chocolate-Cherry deliver caffeine along with the carbs, while caffeine-free flavors include Cinnamon Apple, Banana Peach and Strawberry Kiwi.

Frankly, I don't care how it tastes or what it does for me. The title -- with its all-caps format and exclamation point -- are enough to make me pull one out  right now.

Ahem. I meant to say "RIGHT NOW!"

Neither of them could be called "all natural", but I didn't see any animal products on the list. I don't know about CarBoom gels, but e-Gels and Gu both taste disgusting when you're just hanging out on your couch. An amazing transformation occurs when your body is glycogen-depleted. I can think of nothing better to eat than Gu during a marathon. They're really not useful for anyone but endurance atheletes (who swear by gels like these) though some people have problems stomaching them because they're so rich.

Thanks for passing the word.

maltodextrin, filtered water, fructose, GU amino acid blend, potassium and sodium citrate, GU antioxidant blend, natural coffee flavor, citric acid, sea salt GU herbal blend, calcium carbonate, sodium benzoate, potasium sorbate and pectin

so I guess they're using pectin in leui of gelatin

I have at least one of every flavor of Gu, and they're all similar to the ingredients above; no gelatin. e-Gels are similar as well (Tropical Blast flavor): maltodextrin, filtered water, fructose, citric acid, sodium citrate, potassium citrate, natural flavor, e-Gel amino acid blend (leucine, valine, isoleucine, histidine, antioxidant vitamins C and E, sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate (for freshness) red 40, yellow 5, vitamin B6. Note that most Gu gels contain caffeine, while e-Gels do not. e-Gels have 150 calories in 1.9 oz, 37 grams of carbs. Gu has 100 calories, but the packet is smaller. Both work great, and taste good as long as you're excercising.
