The 10 largest coffee chains in the US

coffeeIn this morning's LA Times Business section, the feature story is about Peet's Coffee, the chain that inspired Starbucks. The article is interesting, but the outstanding tidbit of information exists in a small box that lists the top 10 coffeehouse chains in the United States, as of the first quarter of 2006. It's not a surprise that Starbucks is number one, with 8,000 locations (in the US). But what was surprising to me is that the second largest chain is Caribou Coffee, with 322 locations.

The second largest coffeehouse chain in the US trails number one Starbucks by 7,700 locations. That is scary. The entire list of the top ten shows just how HUGE-mungous Starbucks is:

  1. Starbucks - 8,000
  2. Caribou Coffee - 322
  3. Tim Horton's - 292
  4. Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf - 213
  5. Coffee Beanery - 200
  6. Seattle's Best - 160 (which happens to be a subsidiary of Starbucks!)
  7. Peet's Coffee - 112
  8. Tully's - 100
  9. Dunn Bros. Coffee - 85
  10. Port City Java - 55

I rather enjoyed my latte at Caribou.

But my favorite (as a Los Angeles resident) has always been Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, but not for the coffee, they have excellent looseleaf tea.

Still, having occasionally journeyed to parts of our fair country where they have not even such a thing as Starbucks, I've seen the belly of the beast. I'll take Seattle's bitter brew over watery gas station coffee any day.

There are tons of chains not listed (Dunkin', etc.) - they're no less coffee shops that Starbucks is.

(Also, any Canadian will tell you that Tim Horton's is a donut shop too.)

Here in New England there are four dunkin donuts within a mile of my (suburban) house and I have to drive about 10 or 12 miles to get to the closest Starbucks.

Also, the coffee from Dunn Bros. is the best coffee I have ever had outside of the home. Just wonderful. They roast fresh every 2 days and it shows. There's even a roaster's log that you can review in-store.

According to this article there are about 5000 dunkin donuts around.

It really doesn't matter what a company does - people freak out if it is in the lead. Doubly so when someone cooks the numbers to exaggerate the lead.
