This week, competitive eater Pat Bertoletti set a new ice cream-eating world record by consuming 1.75 gallons in eight minutes. The ice cream used was vanilla from the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. Bertoletti, fourth in eater rankings, also holds the records for key lime pie, chocolate and corned beef and cabbage.
It is possible to image eating almost any food quickly, even if you can't really conceive of doing it yourself. Ice cream, on the other hand, is not an easy food to eat because of the risk of brain freeze, the intense headache that results from consuming cold foods too quickly. Some of the eaters appeared to be affected by the cold, but Bertoletti ate the ice cream as though it were no colder than a pile of warm mashed potatoes. I'm not sure if "impressive" fully describes the performance, but watch the video to see for yourself.

Eating contests are a wasteful reminder that our society is going quickly down the tubes. How about the next company that puts on an eating contest instead donate the food (or money used to buy the food) to hunger relief where it is needed?
Just so wasteful and sickening.

I agree with Frodo. Eating contests are plain common, self indulgent and have NOTHING to do with appreciating food.
I think it's a great tragedy that so many people have so little to do with their lives than behave in such a wasteful manner.
I also think it's a shame we give them any air time at all on slashfood.

Eh, wasteful perhaps, but no more "wasteful" than dropping $100 at some fancy restaurant when you could've eaten elsewhere for half the price and given the other $50 to charity. The IFOCE does, by the way, regularly donate money to hunger charities. (Though not as much as I'd like to see them donate. Some sort of program that matches the amounts eaten an equal donation to charity would be nice).
Besides, have you ever seen how much food is discarded at the end of every day at all-you-can-eat buffets? Now THAT'S waste. Have you ever eaten at an all-you-can-eat buffet? Of course. Does that make us contributors to the waste? Perhaps.

I can't believe how mad some people get over things that are so irrelevant and unimportant...WHO CARES...to each their own.
"sickening", "wasteful" and "great tragedy" are rather harsh words (along with some pretty harsh feelings) for an eating contest...
I really hope you people that are so disgusted by it have never wasted or thrown away ANY food and I hope you donate every last piece of food...oh...and you better not ever let anything spoil either...cuz that's wasteful too.
Go find something better to complain about. People like that strike me as people that just like to complain and be negative about anything and everything.

to #7: thank you, stacey. i haven't been visiting slashfood lately because every time i read a post, there's always all these negative comments, especially ones that include lines like "i can't believe this is on slashfood" or "slashfood is better than that." get off your high horse, and give it a rest.
"1. Eating contests are a wasteful reminder that our society is going quickly down the tubes."
it seems one of these eating contests, the nathan's 4th of july hot dog eating contest, started in 1916. yeah, ever since then, society has REALLY gone down hill since then...give me a break.

Thanks TR!!
I don't even know what 'slashfood' is...there was a blurb about the ice cream eating contest on my aol homepage...so, I clicked on it because I was curious to see if the person was fat or not!! lol
Then I started to read the comments and couldn't believe how mad people get over such little things.
People should lighten up....there are a million more things that need to be fixed in this world before we worry about ice cream eating contests...(if they need to be worried about at all!!)

wow...so, apparently you can't voice an opinion about other peoples opinions on this blog if it doesn't agree with them. interesting.
i really didn't think my post was offensive or promotional??? (which are reasons i would understand having my post deleted for...i merely disagreed and think people should lighten up and not take eating contests so seriously.)
too funny.

..... I don't see anyone complaining our field day at our children's school or what about the olympics or a baseball game... our society is competitive.... in all facets. If people choose to eat pies or go on fear factor(yuck!) for a chance at $50,000.00 that is their choice. World hunger has always been in existence and pies, ice cream, and other foods ain't changing that!

I love how judgmental and self-righteous everyone is--as if a few characters who like to participate in eating contests are contributing to world hunger--why not focus your anger on our so-called leaders who have the power to do something about poverty but prefer to concentrate on helping their corporate fatcat pals? Or how about mindless celebs who haul around handbags that cost $15,000? Sheesh.

Relax people, it's an ice cream eating contest. Hot dogs, blueberry pies, etc., all in good fun. Does it promote overeating? Hardly. I seriously doubt that any of the small handful of contestants eat 2 gallons of ice cream in a few minutes, 52 hotdogs at a sitting or a fruit pie in two minutes while in their kitchens at home or at their local restaurant. Please. The Famous Nathan's July 4 Hot Dog Eating Contest on Coney Island, Brooklyn (NYC), gathers competitors from around the world, has been going on since the early 1900s and is even televised live on ESPN. Sounds to me that quite a few people enjoy it.

All I want to know is how ol' Pat can down that much ice cream and appear so thin. His metabolism belongs in Guiness. If I ate like that, I would weigh 300# the next day. And, if I at that much ice cream, my brain would freeze over after the first pint, and my head would explode. Perhaps we should call him Iron Man Pat??

Who cares?
We have already the resources to feed everyone in the world 10 times over but does it get to who needs it? No! So if they waste food for some fun what difference does it make.
You cant please everyone so you gotta please yourself.

ithink that any kind of contest for eating is a way of simplifying entertainment in todays crazy hectic world where mos tpeople dont take time out of their busy schedules to actually enjoy all life has to offer--maybe if they slowed down and relished the day the way its meant to be enjoyed, theyd see there is nothing wrong with an eating contest--that is one of the things that makes summers fun---grow up you workaholics and enjoy life its an hour or so out of your day and lifes too short not to enjoy what god has given us---
