According to research, many British shoppers are clueless about normal fruit and vegetable seasons because of the abundance of imported fresh produce. For example, of the 1,007 people who were questioned, 2/3 did not know the ripening season for a given fruit or vegetable, though it seems that there was a big gap based on age. 71% of people over the age of 65 got seasons correct, while only 26% of people aged 18 to 24 got the seasons right.
Most people who guessed named summer months most often.
Is it disturbing? Slightly, since that means the idea of seasonal fruits and vegetables is being lost, though even ths is hard for me to understand, since a lot of things are available for a long time in southern California. Then again, I aslo know i couldn't find a Brussels sprout at the farmers' market right now if I search high and low.
At the same time, I find it a bit encouraging to think that anyone anywhere could eat a strawberry.

I had no clue about this when I used to shop at super markets or even at Trader Joes. However, I did see brussels sprouts just this past Sunday at a Santa Monica farmers' market.

Yes, we can get strawberries year round but they not nearly as good as the local ones only available for a few months. My friend brought corn on the cob to a picnic this past Mem. Day, and I couldn't eat it because I knew it wasn't going to be that good. Also, those "Fourth of July" cake recipes with both blueberries and strawberries crack me up because they aren't in season at the same time! I guess it's just the way my momma raised me....
