To be honest I am not surprised anything by Mr Kipling is in a steep sales decline. I find all their products overly sweet, even for me! And don't get me started on the excessive packaging.
According to a report in the Independent (thanks for the tip John) Bakewell Tarts are one of the declining national foods in the UK. Mr Kiplings version has seen sales fall slumped by 31 per cent last year. Still they managed to sell £9million of the stuff. Anyone interested in a one off blog event to celebrate the humble Bakewell Tart?
Other foods that are apparently dying out include Cromer crabs one of East Anglia's most famous delicacies, but the Cromer crab has suffered a "catastrophic" season, with the number of crabs caught off the Norfolk coast falling to an all-time low. Another is Scottish wild salmon Populations of wild Scottish salmon have been struggling to survive in Highland rivers - in marked contrast to the abundance of farmed salmon. Almost all the salmon now on supermarket shelves is farmed.
Of the 2,000 odd varieties of apples only a handful appear in the supermarkets; so Kentish apples join the endandered list along with special pig breads, North Sea cod, Norfolk black turkeys and Somerset Eels.
