How could I let Steak Day go by without mentioning "High Steaks"? This is the episode of 1950s cat-and-mouse cartoon Tom and Jerry that was clearly the inspiration for "Itchy & Scratchy," the violent cartoons Bart and Lisa are perenially watching on The Simpsons.
In short, Tom's owner is grilling steaks, and through a series of hijinks, Jerry manages to inflict a series of painful steak-related punishments upon Tom including:
- Tom's head placed in a grilling basket
- Tom's tail jammed into the grill
- Tom tied, post-barbecue, to the bumper of a passing car and dragged off

I think that the real inspiration for Itchy and Scratchy came form the Tom and Jerry of the 60s. The animation became almost eastern-european minimalist (The Simpsoms had a good take on that art form once)but worst the action was stale and slow motion sadistic.
In one episode Tom gets his tail caught on the grill and falls into the pool. There he strugles desperately to reach the surface but the grill weighs him down. Just before he drowns the human pulls him out and beats him for getting his grill in the pool.
Not funny then, not funny now, with the Simpsoms creators going all out for the nauseating violence.
