Chef'n makes citrus easier to section

chef'n grapefruiterChef'n is a company that makes kitchen gadgets - everything from an avocado slicer (like the one we saw earlier this year, available from Williams-Sonoma) to barbecue tools painted with hot rod flames. This is Chef'n's Grapefruiter, a tool used to section grapefruits and other citrus.

It looks scary - strangely futuristic, yet medieval. Even though I read the description of the product, I can't figure out how the thing works. You're supposed to insert the tool into a halved grapefruit or other citrus, then squeeze the handles together, which magically sections the fruit.

The Chef'n Grapefruiter is available at stores like Bed, Bath & Beyond, Linens N' Things, and Sur La Table.

SleekStor™? Rev'nChef®? Flexicado™? Pliapaya™?

It looks to me like the metal piece on the end, though it's hard to see from the photo, is actually wedge-shaped. So that goes in, and then it looks like there's a curved blade attached to the end of that orange piece of plastic, which slices in an arc along the rind when you squeeze. So it takes out one segment at a time.

I'm with Jason. I'll stick with the Pare'n-Nife™.

Everything else should do more than one thing (knives only cut but they cut more than one thing). Even those little egg slicers can be used to slice musrooms and other small fruit.

I mean, really? A slicer for avocados and another for papayas? Now this thing?

(Paring knife requires a stroke around the outside of the fruit, and then once on each side of the fruit section. This gadget reduces all of that to one quick grab per fruit section).

But then again, I also love the avocado slicer and my apple slicer.

What can I say, I am a gadget lover.
