While watching the Pistons play the Cavs this weekend, I couldn't help but see (sadly, several times!) the commercial for KFC's attempt to get in on the bowl trend (about two years too late, mind you) with the Cheesy Chicken Mashed Potato Bowl. Apparently, this thing is mashed potatoes, then gravy, then corn, then fried chicken pieces, then grated cheddar cheese.
Some have deemed it the "Cardiac Arrest Bowl."
Various forums, meanwhile, are abuzz with questions like "do cheese and gravy mix?"
For me, it's never simply a question of "is it tasty?" For me, it's a question of "is it tasteful?"
I can't help but wonder what other products are awaiting us in the coming years:
- The Thanksgiving Dinner Bowl: base of yams, then cranberry paste, then turkey, then gravy, then pumpkin pie, and finally a dollop of Cool Whip
- The 21st Birthday Bowl: base of 6 french fries, then Irish Car Bomb, then 6 watermelon shooters, and finally gyro sandwich
- The Bachelor Bowl: base of microwave pizza, then leftover Chinese take-out, then salsa, finally finished by whatever's still in the "Crisper" drawer

Hm. That gives me ideas for this year's dinner. I bet I can work it so that I'll be banned from the kitchen every year after this.

The potatoes are from powder, the biscuits are laden with fake butter flavor, and the cole slaw is inedible.
I can't believe people still eat this shit.

Our take is that KFC has decided to zig while everyone else is zagging. All the other FF joints are trying (or at least want to give the appearance of trying) to get healthier. KFC on the other hand goes back to using the old Kentucky Fried Chicken moniker, and now this.

KFC is good ol american dining and i know for a fact that their chickens are some of the most healthy, well raised animals on earth. KFC prides itself on using only the most high quality meats and ingredients. Nothing beats having the homies over and ordering a fat bucket of KFC with those creamy mash potatoes, hot gravy, soft buttermilk biscuits. And original recipe is OFF THE HOOK. Tired of tree huggers and extremists giving KFC a bad rap. Those chickens are finger licking good fool!

My husband, for example, thinks it's weird to have them more than, say, once a week. Me, on the other hand, I could have them like the Chinese eat rice. Since polite company dictates that I not eat mashed potatoes every single day, the rare chance to have them means they shouldn't be adulterated in any way. This goes for you too, garlic! But I digress. Cheesy mashed potatoes, sure why not, have a Wild Tuesday. Mashed potatoes and gravy, alright if you must, but gravy and cheese is just appalling. Of course KFC is appalling. KFC's potatoes are appalling. It really seems like an SNL parody - much like the one they did for the Taco Bell-like Taco thing.

Anne, you jest about the Thanksgiving Dinner Bowl, but my family will often SKIP the actual turkey meal and go right for Leftover Casserole: layer sliced turkey (breast will do), peas or lima beans, stuffing, gravy, and mashed potatos. Warm in 325 degree oven and serve with MORE gravy (duh) and rolls. It's delicious. I swear!
BUT--I wouldn't eat that thing at KFC on a dare. Ick.

KFC had these around here for a few months now, and in my opinion, they're not that bad. although, i had the one with rice, instead of mashed potatoes. the whole idea reminds me of plate lunches i've had in hawaii. but i guess many of you would think that's disgusting also.

I know it is over-the-top and not realy homemade cooking and all that but still tastes great. People who hate it without even trying it should really give it a shot and then hate it.

You barely taste the cheese. The corn is ok. The chicken is the usual as in too salty tasting. Mashed potatoes and gravy, which I do enjoy, have the usual consistency and taste. Overall I'd eat it once or twice a year when I was there with family.

We have fast food place in our town called Krystals (I think they're all over the south). We've never eaten in one, as when when visited for our first time, we were overcome with the most foul odour which prevented us from eating.
Anyhow, they make a breakfast cup which I've seen in a commercial. I believe it's a layer of grits, then milk gravy, potato, sausage patty and cheese. I told my husband that anyone who ate that for breakfast would deserve the heart attack they got.
Ick

I don't think I will order this specific concoction, only because my local KFC has a buffet ($5.99 all you can eat!) and I can just make this there myself. :)
