Slashfood Ate (8): French fries pairings

french fries with garlic and crushed red pepper

Normally, I prefer eating my French fries with nothing more than a generous sprinkle of salt. However, I do realize that oftentimes, French fries are eaten less for the purity of the potato and used more as a vehicle for some accompaniment. There are lots of common other ways to dress up French fries, whether it's something dumped on top, or something in which to dip. As well as some lesser-known, slightly more peculiar ways:

  1. I have to start with the obvious favorite, ketchup. However, if ketchup is the only thing available as a condiment, I like to add Tabasco sauce and black pepper.
  2. The first time I ever had garlic fries, they were at Dodger stadium from Gordon Biersch Brewery. I was hooked. Now, if ever I make garlic fries at home, I sprinkle hot French fries with chopped fresh garlic, parsley, and crushed red pepper (as pictured above). Marinara sauce, optional. Breath mints, required
  3. Dipped in Ranch dressing
  4. Drowning in meaty, greasy beefy chili, melted cheese, and chopped fresh onions.
  5. Malt vinegar
  6. I don't know who or why, but mayonnaise seems to be a popular favorite. As long as it's not Miracle Whip, I think I'm okay with this.
  7. I have yet to try it, but someone mentioned poutine in the comments of an earlier slashfood post about cheese curds. Poutine is a dish of French fries topped with cheese curds, and covered with gravy. I saw Tony Bourdain eat this on a recent episode of No Reservations. Next trip to Canada, must try poutine.
  8. This one's for you. Please add your own peculiar way of eating French fries.

I'm canadian and a teenager, so vast amounts of poutine are essential. For a while, I practically lived off New York Fries' the Works; in addition to all the gooey stuff in it, I added in their garlic dip. Good stuff.
I do so love fries and mayo. Even better? Fries dipped in mayo that's been mixed with some other fry-friendly condiment, generally ketchup or barbeque sauce. It's lovely.
Arby's curly fries with the Arby's sauce or their berry sauce is good too. The berry sauce comes with the jalapenos, which are good too. And i've tried Wendy's frosty + fries too. It's not bad either.
I must say, 15's sounds fantastic.

I'm a pig. Wouldn't have it any other way.

For McDonalds fries it's all about Sweet & Sour Sauce and Heinz ketchup (sometimes swirled, double-dipped, or alternated). I never get McD's fries without Sweet & Sour Sauce. Whenever possible I'm inclined to dip fries in warm Bull's Eye BBQ sauce. Under NO circumstances am I putting a ketcup other than Heinz on my fries. If its not available I'd go plain or with a whole other condiment.

The Poutine has evolved over here in the last few years.

My High School used to serve a "Pizza Poutine" which substituted tomatoe sauce for the gravy.

But the best I've had is in our Nation's Capital (Ottawa), at the Elgin Street Diner, which is open 24 hours a day and is a favourite with the pub crowd...

Check out their Poutine menu: http://www.elginstreetdiner.com/admin/menus/menu.htm#8

My fav has always been the Philly Steak Poutine.

Mmmmm...

Never thought I'd dig this dish, but, had a huge mound of crispy salty, skinny fries served to me at Jack's Urban Eats in Sacramento, California. The mound was drizzled with bleu cheese dressing, and then, drizzled with hot chili oil (like you'd use for pot stickers). The whole vile looking mess is then liberally sprinkled with parseley. The flavor sensation was simply outstanding -- and I don't like buffalo wings, so that's saying something. Bring on the Urban Fries!
