Previous studies about the tempting nature of foods have always assumed that the brain functions the same way in all people, but it turns out that some people are more affected by images of food than other people are. When someone's "reward center" was over-activated by temptations - say, a picture of a delicious chocolate cake - they were more likely to give in to those temptations. The study noted that such a reaction could make people more susceptible to forms of marketing and product advertisement, as well as even to other addictions, like drug use or alcoholism.
I know that I prefer to see images of tempting foods in cookbooks and on blogs, but I think it gives me a greater appreciation for the food, not necessarily tempting me to overeat. Indeed, something that is perfectly presented might make me less likely to tuck in, not wanting to disturb the art-like arrangement on my place. Have you ever been driven to overeat by a picture? Does this mean that we need to add a disclaimer to our Food Porn category?

It's horrible but, when I watch specials on obesity and eating disorders and the producers zoom in on the delicious food, I always end up wandering to the kitchen for a snack. I just get so _hungry_.
Case in point: I just ate some (Splendified, low-fat!) chocolate ice cream. It was good; I was full. But then I saw that cake picture, and now I'm eying the German chocolate cake on the counter.
It's so, so bad. But oh so good.

The other night, the show 'Unwrapped' that shows how various foods are made aired an episode on the seven-layer dip: beans, guacamole, sour cream, salsa, cheese, etc. After watching the show, and after a week of healthy eating, I went to the corner store and picked up a HUGE bag of tortilla chips and sour cream and guacamole dip. I finished the entire bag of chips.
Then last night, again after watching the Food Network (I should probably stop watching it), I finished the remaining 1/3 box of cereal and an entire bag of popcorn.
Don't get me wrong; I love the Food Network. And I hope this doesn't start some sort of ban, but after watching one or two tasty episodes, I want to eat whatever foods were presented on the shows!!
