You've been reading our ramblings here at Slashfood for months now, so isn't it about time you get to know us? We've been playing 20 questions with our Slashfood bloggers, just so you can see what kind of insanity is cooking in our brains. And kitchens. We've already met Nick, Stefania, Andrew, Joe, and Heather. This week, it's LA-based baking diva, Nicole Weston.
Do you have a personal blog?
You mean, other than Slashfood? Indeed, I do. It's called Baking Bites and has a HUGE number of baking recipes.
What is your day job, or rather, what do you do when you're not food blogging?
If I'm not blogging for Baking Bites, Slashfood and Luxist, I'm writing. If I'm not writing, I'm probably cooking something, though I don't consider that to be a job.
How long have you been blogging with Slashfood and what is your favorite post?
I have been blogging with Slashfood since November of 2005. I probably have too many posts to pick a definitive favorite, but I do like all the ones I've done with recipes, like these lemon buttermilk cupcakes and these pretzels. I'll pick Adventures in Espresso for the moment.
Do you have any non-food-related, non-blogging hobbies?
I love horses. I have done all different kinds of riding and have competed in several different disciplines over the years. Right now, I concentrate on dressage and am a huge fan of American Saddlebreds.
Not every foodie does, but do you cook?
If you have to ask me that, clearly you haven't clicked through to my blog.
What is your most prized utensil/gadget in the kitchen?
I have more than one. My espresso machine and my stand mixer are definitely the two most expensive things I have, but worth every penny. I'd say that my chef's knife is quite important, as well.
List three things in your refrigerator right now.
Fage 0% Greek Yogurt, salsa and artichokes.
You have to impress a date with a home-cooked meal. What are you going to make?
I don't care that much about using "real" food to impress people. I'd make dessert, instead, and I'd pick something that I know the other person would like.
What is the last thing you ate?
Does coffee count as a food?
Confession time – what do you eat that will get you banned from Slashfood?
I think that we all like so many different things here, no one could be banned for eating a particular food. I can't think of anything.
If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
If it had to be a meal, it would be chili. If survival wasn't a question, I think it would be marshmallows.
But we're quite sure that one could survive off of marshmallows. Especially if they're Peeps.
Your Mom makes the best _____.
Hot wings. They're famous.
Which chef would you most like to have come into your kitchen and cook you dinner?
Bill Granger or Donna Hay. I heard Christopher Walken is a great cook, too, but I guess he's not actually a chef.
Who would you most like to eat dinner with?
My friends. I wouldn't mind eating dinner with Stephen, from Top Chef, either. I bet he's really fun in person.
Your drink of choice?
Coffee. Could you guess?
Where was your best restaurant dining experience?
The French Laundry. No question.
The worst?
I had an unfortunate series of dining experiences last year in Sydney where everything I ordered was soaking in oil. I mean, the plates were just pools of oil. This was a particular problem since the things I was ordering at the time were sandwiches.
Do you want fries with that?
It depends. Where are they from?
What foods do you think should be banished from existence?
Deep dish, stuffed crust pizza. I practically have a heart attack just looking at it.
What do you see as the biggest "thing" in food for the coming year?
I see a wider variety of spices being used in restaurants and more intense spices, which is great because I love spicy foods.
