The flavor of the month here in LA is The Bowery, a small bar-slash-bistro, located in Hollywood, but vibing New York City, all the way down to the glossy white subway tiles that adorn the front. I went recently to celebrate my 1040 - I didn't owe anything (no refund, but now owing is good enough).
We sat down at the bar, which takes up the majority of the space. There are only a few regular dining tables in the front. We looked at the menu, which didn't take long, since it has less than a dozen items, all of which are very simple French-ish American fare like salads, burgers, and macaroni and cheese. "French" because the mac and cheese is "Macaroni au gratin."
We ordered the now-famous Bowery Burger, which is served on a toasted English muffin and can be embellished with everything from St. Andre or blue cheese to sauteed mushrooms. We opted for the blue cheese and grilled onions -- it was awesome. It was made even better chased with a Chimay, which we were hard pressed to pick over the "Low Life" drink special listed on the blackboard mounted on the wall. The "Low Life" is a PBR and a well shot.
The Bowery also serves sides like French fries and onion rings. The sweet potato fries were delicious. Next time, though, I definitely want to try the onion rings. And the French fries. And the mashed potatoes. Hell, I might want to go to the Bowery, and have cocktails with just the sides!
