Margarita Minis from Jose Cuervo

Margaritas taste great, but can be a hassle to make. You really either need a blender or a cocktail shaker to mix one up and it's not in their nature to be portable, since you also need bottles of both tequila and margarita mix, if not triple sec and a lime to go with them. Jose Cuervo now makes having a margarita as easy as having a beer with their Margarita minis. The 9.95% alcohol by volume drinks come in 50 mL square, glass bottles packed in groups of four. They are lime flavored, made with Cuervo Gold tequila and pack a punch from both. To serve, pour the bottle out into an ice-filled glass or simply chill the individual bottles. They're up to Cuervo's usual standards - meaning that they taste great. Don't forget to share!

Only Cuervo's top end products are passable and those are overpriced. Cuervo Gold is one of the worst tequilas made; it is 49% of the nastiest cane sugar alcohol around (bum rum, effectively) with caramel and food coloring to give it that sickly golden glow. These "margarita minis" are even worse -- zero consideration for "tequila" quality and a nasty mix of way too many ingredients. Cuervo's only "standard" has focused on very effectively using marketing to sell tons and tons of shlocky quality product to a clueless population.

Margarita mixes are even worse. Anything fruit juice based needs to be fresh (or fresh frozen). Bottling it and letting it sit on a shelf means that it has to have all kinds of nasty flavor modifying stabilizers to gain any kind of a shelf life.

A good margarita is trivial to make and requires nothing more than a decent 100% blue agave tequila, fresh limes and some ice.

From that base, you can adjust ratios and flavors through the use of other kinds of fruit, the addition of Cointreau, using cane sugar or agave nectar for sweetness. Salt on the rim is purely optional and is generally served with bad margaritas -- ones made with cuervo gold and any premade mix -- to cover the awful flavor.

I happen to think that a portable margarita is a great idea and, while obviously a quality, homemade one (as bbum) suggests) will be superior, you still can't realistically take your blender, margarita glasses and salt to the park or tailgating. But you can take a little bottle.

For that matter, this doesn't provide margarita glasses, either. Just drink your homemade margarita out of a Solo cup. You're less likely to get busted by the cops for that, anyway.

Anyway, I completely agree with Eric. This was more like advertising than Cuervo's own copy on their flash-based website.

And tequila is (peripherally, at least) associated with cinco de mayo celebrations, hence the tequila posts. Be forewarned: there will probably be at least one more tequlia related post before friday. In fairness to other tequila brands, though, perhaps I should use something other than Cuervo to make my margaritas? I'm open to suggestions!

You can opt to carry the fresh squeeze lime juice (possibly with a little added sugar or other sweetening ingredient) in a bottle in a cooler of ice. Or, as long as it isn't going to sit for more than 24 hours on ice, just mix the tequila in at the beginning of the day. Keep it in a jug on ice and pour out into cups for serving.

No need for glassware or a blender (unless you prefer a frozen margarita -- of which a margarita mini is a far cry from a frozen margarita).
