I'm not a fan of kitchen "gadgets" beyond a
very good knife and maybe a melon baller when necessary (but then, when is a melon baller every necessary?), but this avocado
slicer from Williams-Sonoma really piques my interest.
I always just do the old wrenching-out of the pit, making longitudinal slices, then scooping out the flesh with a large spoon, but this might be helpful for those of us who want to make pretty, presentable uniform slices or dices of avocado. The tool also pits the avocado, but I can't tell how it does it from the picture.
It's $15.

I imagine it pits the avo with that yellow loop at the other end of the handle.

eh, seems a little pricey for a one-use thingie. I whack the pit with the heel of a knife and slice the avocado in hand. A silicone spatula is really handy to pop the goodness from the skin though. I'm less likely to take a chunk out of the avocado with the spatula.
I love using a melon baller to core pears and apple halves with. it looks much prettier than my previous whack away method.

I have one (not that exact model, but same idea) and it ROCKS! It's the fastest, easiest way to get the job done, and you come out with lovely, uniform slices. I think if you look around you can find them cheaper than $15.

eh, they're not that useful. I used to have one, but it's such a annoyance to clean (no dishwasher) that it wasn't worth it. It only takes slightly longer to use a paring knife and spoon, and with a dedicated avocado slicer, you have problems getting it detached and onto your plate.
Trust me, they are neat gadgets, but I wouldn't waste money on one.

I have one that I got from Bed Bath and Beyond for $9. It is super fast, and living in California I eat a lot of avocados. It is so fast and easy, and the presentation is beautiful, and no struggling with a knife to get the flesh out of the skin.
I love mine, it's my top 5 pick out of my kitchen tools.
