Several months ago, I did a beer taste test, so that I
could teach my fairly green beer-palate. Since then, I've been trying different beers to see if I can find something
out there that I like.
I recently tried an Italian beer, Birra Moretti. My logic was that it might taste good to me, since I love Italian Pinot Grigios and other wines. Birra Moretti is the name of the brewing company that was founded in 1859 by Luigi Moretti. The brewery is based out of Udine, Italy.
The beer was a pretty pale golden color, which is a good sign for me, but it had the same funky smell as a Heineken, which I definitely don't like. I also found the taste of Birra Moretti to be a little bit too bitter.
I guess I'll stick to wines from Italy, and leave the beer to...the Germans?

This stuff is the Milwaukees Best of Italy, it was cheaper than water in a number of places and tastes like it should be. I drank more if it than I would care to admit while I was last in Italy. This is up there with Keystone and Beast, you drink it because its cheap not because its good.

You might have run across some skunked beer. It can happen to anyone, and often does. :) http://www.google.com/search?q=skunked+beer

Be sure to check out beers from Belgium. They are the masters of beer! Germany comes in second for me. Try Chimay and Corsendonk to start...

I like Moretti with lunchtime helpings of certain pasta dishes - mostly those with heavier, oily sauces, when the astringent qualities of the Moretti help to cut the heavy mouthfeel of the oils. Like Newcastle Brown Ale with Fish and Chips, Moretti just seems to go well with Tortellini Romanov.
Maybe I'm not hip, but I just don't want wine at lunch, and a simple, slightly bitter beer can keep my mouth from getting that heavy, clogged feeling from the entr?

Sarah - just keep on trying and try to keep track of the beers you don't like! When I moved to the UK I spent months only drinking lager because the first 'English' beer I had (Shepherd Neame's Kentish Spitfire, if anyone cares!) I didn't like. I was then taken to a beer festival where I could try a lot of different beer and have since discovered (and developed) quite a passion for the stuff.
If you can get Timothy Taylor's Landlord in America I'd give it a go!

As another reader posted, I definately recommend a Belgium beer if you don't like the taste of hops (the bitter, funky smell/taste).
I would highly recommend that you pick up one of these two blonde beers: either "Blue Moon" or "Hoegaarden". Make sure to squeeze a slice of lemon (NOT lime) in the beer before drinking an enjoy!
