Say what you will about them, but frozen pizzas are a staple component of many, many kitchens. They take no
preparation and heat up wonderfully in the oven in the amount of time that it would take to have a pizza delivered.
Well, some of them heat up wonderfully. There are some pizzas that are not even worth turning on the oven for.
In my opinion, the best frozen pizza is a homemade one, but I know that not all people have the time or energy to freeze their own, unbaked pizzas. Fair enough, even though you can buy pre-made, uncooked dough at many supermarkets nowadays. Though certainly not covering all of the possible options for frozen pizza that there are, here is a quick guide to some of the pizza choices that will be waiting at your fingertips when you take a stroll through the freezer section:
-
DiGiorno - 9/10 - Did you know that the pepperoni pizza has little bits of pepperoni in the sauce, too? That's what takes this thick-crusted pizza over the edge, though offering a half-cheese/half-pepperoni option is a great idea. The rising crust is perhaps a little thicker than fresh pizza, but very tasty.
-
California Pizza Kitchen - 10/10 - These pizzas come out of the oven tasting darn close to what you'll get in a restaurant. It's great that they come in more unusual flavors than pepperoni, too. Try the Thai Chicken!
-
Freschetta - 8/10 - Just like the DiGiorno, the crust gets crisp on the outside and relatively chewy overall, without being too dense. They're usually seasoned well, particularly the Tomato, Basil and 3-Cheese
-
Amy's Organics - 7/10 - It's great that these are organic, and they're pretty tasty, too. Fortunately, they are becoming easier to find, though it seems that markets tend to carry only the very basic kinds - more cornmeal crusts, please! All the veggie options are a great change from the meat-laden (if you're lucky) mainstream pizzas.
-
Tombstone - 6/10 - These never seem to have quite enough sauce on them, though the flavor is good and they are usually very cheesy. The crust has a hard time crisping up in the oven, too, and is a bit on the soggy side - possibly from the amount of cheese. Of course, if you like a ton of cheese, you're in luck with this brand.
- Stouffer's French Bread - 6/10 - Not in the same class as the rest of the frozen pizzas because it doesn't have a true pizza crust. Nevertheless, the crust does crisp up well and the toppings are of the usual quality for Stouffer's products - which is to say that it's good. They make a great snack, but are not quite the real thing.
-
Red Baron - 4/10 - The crust on these never really gets crispy, or else it burns, but if you like your crust on the doughy side, they're not that bad. The cheese can definitely get rubbery, something that you can almost tell by looking at the pictures on the package. If they can't make it look tasty, that's not a good sign.
-
Celeste - 1/10 - They taste bad and are much smaller even than you would expect from the size of the box. Don't waste your money even when they are on sale at 10/$10.

Isn't that why we eat pizza anyway people is for the toppings not the bread but I do like the thin crust crispy so I cook it directly on the rack with a pan on the shelf underneath to catch the drips.

I customize my pizzas (any brand usually does well) add veggies/cheese/meat at home before baking at 450degrees directly on oven rack. It's a cross between homeade and delivery.

If you can't order in, Digiornio is the way to go. I will try Palermo to see what it's like just for the sake of good.

The pizzas here are served THIN CRUST, and they cost around average/cheapest $5.00 (around 4 EURO) for a "cheese pizza, which they're served as a small pizza, but meant for a ONE PERSON MEAL....(do the numbers).
If you're paying more than $6.00 for a frozen pizza made in the US...you're paying too much, and my average for a frozen pizza is about $3-4. I like a lot the DiGiorno SPICY CHICKEN SUPREME PIZZA as my number ONE, pricing for around the $5 range.
Wanna taste the REAL Italian Pizza?...choose the THIN CRUST PIZZA styles, just imagine every combination ever imagined. SEAFOOD Pizza goes around or over the $10.00 range - EURO value.

That way the crust is always fresh and not dried out and you can order it any way you want. They had both red and white sauces. When we lived in Washington State they were there. Right at the moment there is none where we live now....but we keep hoping!!

For some reason the one that is packaged in plastic does not taste as good as the one in the box. This frozen pizza is the closest to pizza shop pizza I have ever tasted. The pepperoni is really spicy.

Durban's is excellent, as well as Little Mike's. Really no matter what pizza place you go to in Chicago, has great pizza. Another thing, they do have thin and crispy. Many people think they are only known for their deep dish. Not true. I love thin and crispy. If ever in Chicago, try the pizza.

Tree Tavern frozen pizza deserves a mention. It a very good size for how inexpensive it is ($3.99 by me), and it’s great tasting, basic pizza. It’s pretty much our official pizza, and one we can all agree on.

Totino's Combination Frozen Pizza is great; as are their other topping selections, 4 meat, pepperoni, etc. The secret to baking right on the oven rack is to first put a piece of aluminum foil down on the bottom of the oven to catch any spills; that should last for a month or so. Regular price for Totino's is $1.99 and on sale they are 2 for $1.99.

I never even bought a Red Baron pizza until last year, even though I'd seen them in the frozen food aisles for as long as I can remember. One day, they were on sale, I was broke, so I gave one a try. I thought they were great! I think the key, though, is definitely cooking them properly. They MUST be cooked on a pan that's been preheated in the oven first. And, though the directions don't say so, I take the pizza off the pan and put it directly on the rack for the last few minutes of cooking. I think Red Baron's pizzas have very generous, quality toppings, and are about the best value one can get in a frozen pizza in terms of taste. The one thing Red Baron needs to work on is thinning out the center of their pizzas, because the edges can start to burn by the time the center of the pizza is really cooked.
