Hardee's remained a distant memory of my East Coast childhood until the third day of a
road trip last summer. We were on the way to a KCBS barbecue competition and paused
to eat what we all agreed was the best fast-food breakfast sandwich ever. Why no one else has come up with something as
tasty as the Grilled Pork Chop Biscuit is beyond me.
Out of
gluttonous machismo I also tried the Thickburger. A third of a pound of fast-food beef was plenty for me. Now,
picture the very same patty capped with a Philly cheesesteak.
Hardee's is quick to point out that the gutbusting Phillycheesteak
Thickburger it unveiled this week is no mere cheeseburger gussied up with peppers and onions. It's a Thickburger
crowned with thinly sliced steak, two kinds of cheese and green peppers and onions. I haven't read what this thing
weighs in at, but judging by the photo, my money's on just over half a pound.
I like to think that Hardee's Philly Cheesesteak Thickburger was inspired by SNL's Taco Town sketch, a
brilliant piece that simultaneously skewers and celebrates the wretched, surreal excess of fast food today. All I know
is, next time I'm on some Interstate this summer and a blue food sign with a smiling Hardee's logo pops into view, I'm
gonna have to try one of these monsters. I just hope they're on the breakfast menu. God help me.
