I hate buffets, but I have to say that if there were ratings or rankings for
buffets, Vegas buffets would be at the bottom. They are the worst.
I won't necessarily go into why I hate buffets in general (and it's not just the typical sub-institution-quality of the food), but I do wonder what the appeal is of such monstrosities to people who go to Vegas. Is it just the sheer volume of food? The spectrum of different cuisines (though not too much variation in method - everything is fried)? Is there some social aspect of the "salad bar" that I've been missing?
Now, many people I know say that I must have been going to very bad buffets, and that there really are some good buffets in Vegas. The question is then, "Where?" Where are the good buffets in Vegas? Does such a thing really exist?
I am doubtful. It's still a buffet.

A couple years back though I arrived in Las Vegas on a Sunday to set up for a trade show. I arrived at 9AM but couldn't get into the convention center until 2PM. So I decided to check out the buffet at the Bellagio. It was pretty impressive. And while the large slab of scrambled eggs is usually the worst thing, there was a cook available to fix omlettes or fried eggs to order for you.
I don't remember it being terribly cheap, but it was a pretty nice buffet.

It is a bit on the expensive side, but definitely worth it! Perfect Eggs Benedict, sushi, prime rib, omlete station and even dim sum! It's worth the $35 you pay, even if it's for the unlimited champagne!

(And don't even get me started on their desserts! Yum!)

I spent a good deal of time in Vegas, and found that the Rio's World Carnival Buffet was quite good -- I recall they had two or three big Mongolian BBQ tables running in parallel, which was quite impressive. Texas Station was also one of the top buffets. For me, the quality of the food was the most important criterion for judging a good buffet.
Some of the best experiences in Vegas aren't on The Strip, and these two buffets are no exception. You'll find The Rio a klick from the uptown Vegas strip, and and Texas Station is just off of downtown Vegas, where you don't want to miss the gritty "Fremont Street experience", which attracts all the serious gamblers. It's my favorite place to lose money!
This was years ago, however. The most astonishing thing I experienced in Veags was how fast things change. I'm certainly going to look up the Bellagio buffet next time I'm in town, that is if it's still around.

The worst thing about a buffet is having to touch the same utensils as everyone else. Consider that many of the food poisoning “epidemics” on cruise ships are because someone did not wash their hands after taking a dump before proceeding to the buffet line. Everyone is likely using the same utensils so everyone is sharing the same fecal matter. It sucks but it is a fact of life. Think about that next time you eat at a buffet and also think about that before you blame the hotel buffet for your upset stomach.
I love food immensely but this is a situation where ignorance is bliss...

I love being able to eat as much or as little of an item as you want and not have to worry about value. Granted there is often poor food served at most buffets but good quality ones can be found. The Rio's buffet was quite good too. I haven't been to the Bellagio's or Paris' but I will next time I'm in Vegas.
