Whopper Original and Milkshake Robin Eggs review

Whoppers are candies with a chocolate coating over a malted milk center. They are almost identical to Maltesers, though fans of one will argue that it is better than the other. Maltesers are made by Mars, while Whoppers are made by Hershey. Around Easter, Whoppers adds a brightly colored candy coating to the balls and calls them Robin Eggs. Personally, I am a huge fan of the candy coating and look forward to picking up a bag of these around Easter. The extra crunch that comes before reaching the chocolate layer and melt-in-your-mouth malted center is great.

This year, I saw that Whoppers released a Strawberry Milkshake version of Robin Eggs. Instead of milk chocolate beneath the candy coating, there is a layer of white chocolate surrounding a strawberry-flavored malted milk center. Though they are a bit on the sweet side, the combination of strawberry and malt was perfect. I think that it would have worked with a milk chocolate, rather than the white, and ended up tasting like an ice cream sundae.

Let's give credit where credit is due!

By the way, Brachs Malted Milk eggs are way better than the original Whoppers. Whoppers chocolate seems to me to be waxy. The Brachs version actually tastes like milk chocolate. Try them!

Then it hit me, when I was a kid they didn't have Robins Eggs, but they did have Peeps, I used to wait until they got stale and then ear them. I know, but I was a kid! As for my likes, I have never had Mars Malteasers, now I have found an excuse to buy a bag of those and Whoppers to compare. Oh yes and I will have to try the Strawberry Robins Eggs too. Of course I will share.

There is nothing as disappointing as getting what you think are "real" malted milk eggs, only to find they have the appropriate type center, but the coating is a waxy white chocolate flavored "something". If you can't paint your lips with 'em, don't eat 'em!

While I prefer Whoppers to Robins Eggs, it brought a smile to my face to remember using the candy coating as lipstick. It's been a while since I've done that, but I think it's time to stop being such a grown-up and try it again. Hey, why not? My kids already think I'm crazy! lol

I really try not to go there--if I do, there goes $20 in a blink of an eye!

Years back, my late grandmother taught me how to "read" the chocolates in the samplers-there are specific swirls on the top, telling what's inside.

None of the other neighborhood kids could figure out how I could home in on the cherry cordials and the caramel filled candies, and not take one's I didn't like!

I have a daughter who is deathly allergic to brown chocolate and 2 grandsons that have a mild allergy to brown chocolate. Now I can buy them chocolate they can eat and not get sick or die. This is NO JOKE, I am very serious about this. These companies need to stop and think, a lot of people have allergies to chocolate(brown) and can get very sick or even die from it, just as they can from other foods they are allergic to.

Me, too! Thanks for reminding me of better days (using the melting candy coating as lipstick, even if it only lasted a few seconds!). Actually, I really don't care what brand of malted milk balls I eat! Yes, the quality of chocolate differs greatly, but this carboholic doesn't c-a-r-e!!
