Obviously, the NPD Group, which tracks American
drinking habits when dining out, must be doing these kinds of studies for marketing and the hospitality
industry, but the stats are still fun,
nonetheless.
Beer beats the rest. 55% of consumers who are drinking at lunch are drinking beer, and even though it's called the "cocktail hour," 58% of drinkers were drinking beer over 34% drinking cocktails. (I am part of that 34%!)
Obviously, drinks increase a dinner tab, but drinks also add indirectly, both to our bills, and our bellies. When
someone orders wine with the meal, they are more likely to order dessert!
During the week, 34% of American
diners include alcohol with their meals. On the weekends, it's 40%. Strangely, I would have thought it would be a much
higher percentage.
Saturday is the most popular day to have a drink with a meal in a restaurant. (No,
really?!?!)
