Torch that Peep!

As some of you may recall, back when Sarah Gim profiled me, I said that Peeps should be banned from the planet.
Surprisingly, there wasn't too much backlash from that. My views aside, there seems to be plenty of affection for these marshmallow creatures around here. Not that I
ever condone eating Peeps, but if you must, then I think perhaps the best way is to make some sort of spectacle out of
it, such as warming them up a tad with a kitchen torch. That's what Colleen Cuisine did.
Props to Colleen for keeping it interesting without resorting to costumes. The folks over at GBSFood did something
similar a while back, with their "Peeps brulee."

Well, Peeps are made from marshmellow, which is made from gelatin, which is made from rendered cow carcass (or sometimes pig skin, you can't tell from the label). Since I'm freaked about mad cow disease I've stopped eating marshmellows. No Peeps for me. I'll have to console myself with chocolate.

Thanks for the link Nick! Yes, I have to admit that flametorched peeps are a near-nightly event this time of year. I don't like them at all plain, but torched, they're a winner.

I read Myron's comments and yes, marshmallow is made from gelatin, which is basically anything they can't sell from the animal in any other form. I don't eat meat, so finding out marshmallow (as well as jello, Altoids, even gum)is gelatin pretty much made me unhappy.
However, all is not lost. I saw some nonanimal based marshmallow at the health food store and will be giving it a try. There is also a recipe at a vegetarian site (can't remember which).

We don't eat peeps, we blow them up in the microwave!!! So cool!
And the chocolate bunnys? We put them in a double boiler and watch them melt like the Wicked Whitch in the Wizard of Oz......them we did strawberries in the chocolate.
The peeps usually burn and we toss them out.
LOL Easter traditions rock!

I love my peeps! The best way to eat them is to take the wrapper off & let them sit out overnight or even a day or two. They are the best a little stale, even bordering on chewy!

The crabbiest person at our annual Easter egg hunt is the person we pick to get "peeped". We love this tradition. The "Peepers" unwrap as many peeps as they desire, and then they fling them as hard as they can at the "Peepee". That's what it means to get peeped. Then we leave all the multi-colored peeps out in the yard until they get all melted in the hot sun. Then we open the front gates and let all the dogs that roam the countryside in so they can enjoy the celebration too. Try it.
