Trader Joe's Top Ten

Alongside their article about Trader Joe's opening in New York, last week's New York Times ran a list of the top ten most popular items at Trader Joe's by volume sold.

  • Charles Shaw Wines
  • Mandarin Orange Chicken
  • Nuts About Antioxidants Trek Mix
  • Lite Shredded 3 Cheese Blend
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Trader Darwin's High Potency Chewable Multiple Vitamin & Mineral Formula Dietary Supplements
  • Crumbled Gorgonzola Cheese
  • Dark Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans
  • Trader Giotto's Pizza Formaggi (Four Cheese Pizza)
  • Cheese & Green Chili Tamales

Strangely, I only buy two out of the top ten items - Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Dark Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans. My top trail mix pick would be the one that has all the peanut brittle in it, not the antioxidant mix. If I'm getting cheese, I'll go for the imported Feta or Parmigiano Reggiano, not pre-crumbled Gorgonzola. With only 10 out of the three thousand items, I supposed that I shouldn’t be surprised that I only regularly purchase two of these items. Which of these are your favorites?

Goat cheese and kalamata olive Pizza
Pork Gyozas (potstickers)
Green Tea Mochi balls
Vacuum packed Frozen fish (so convenient)
Krispy rice/marshmallow bars

But there is so much more that I buy there. My fiancee HATES going to TJ's with me.

My favorite new find is the California Reserve Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Wow, what flavor! (I feel like pulling a Paula and drinking it out of the bottle). I love it over their vine-ripened tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and fresh basil. Or as a dip for bread.

After reading the article, I also tried the thai basil peanuts. They're pretty tasty but if you have any cuts on your lips, they can actually burn quite a bit. And I picked up one of those red peppers that float around in the bag and touched my eye afterwards and OWEE! that hurts.

I'm also a big fan of their dried mixed berries and pecan praline granola over plain yogurt for breakfast.

green tea mochi
extra virgin olive oil
marcona almonds
wasabi cashews
frozen crab cakes

The wines, cookies and candy, and cheese are too numerous to mention. The frozen convenience foods are excellent. This store changed my life!

I'm down with the dark chocolate-covered espresso beans and the CA Reserve Extra Virgin olive oil from this list, but that's about it. Some of my must-haves include Total Greek yogurt, Rockview Organic buttermilk at $.99 per quart, and the no-salt whole peeled plum tomatoes (canned); for my home baking moments, I go for the King Arthur brand All-Purpose and White Whole Wheat flours, organic powdered and brown sugars, and almond meal.

Also their vacuum packed frozen fish. Even in Connecticut.

Oh, and the Super-C juice!

But if I get my chores done, I allow myself a trip for the shrimp or pork gyozas. Absolutely excellent and flavorful, I grabbed chicken by mistake once and loved them too. While there I usually buy for others their favorites: OJ for Dad, lamb and scallops for Mom, and Sesame crackers for a co-worker (I can;t even go in her office when the bag is open, but she loves them!)
