Activia Side Effects: A Two Week Test

activia yogurtWe've already mentioned the new yogurt product from Dannon, Activia, that claims that the live probiotic culture, Bifidus Regularis has been clinically proven to help regularte the digestive system. If you haven't guessed from the culture's scientific name, it keeps you, um, regular.

Well, at the danger of publicly humiliating myself, I have bought one package of the yogurt to test the product's claims, and even went so far as to purchasing the prune flavor for the added benefits of the dried plums. Taste wise, the yogurt is fine, and I've never tasted it with prunes, which is actually pretty good. As far as the results of the Bifidus Regularis? The packaging says that you have to eat it daily for two weeks, so I guess I have to go back to the market and get a second 4-pack.

I'll let you know how everything comes out. (No pun intended.)

I'd be a little worried about eating some proprietary bacteria that isn't found in any other yogurt, regularity or no regularity!

The "Peach with Fibres" is kind of gritty and gross but the prune flavour is far and away the stand-out hit. The syrupy-sweetness of the prunes is a perfect compliment to the creamy yogurt. I expect other yogurteers to be selling this flavour in no time.

Enjoy!

(If your grocery doesn't carry Activia, the Olympic version in the practically identical packaging is not too bad either)

I'm trying the peach and blueberry, I do like the taste and am very interested in feeling the benefits of the probiotics it contains. Maybe I'll go out today and pick up the prune. My supermarket had plenty of it on the shelf! ;)

I have a pretty unstable digestive system and thought...wow this could help!!! It did make me go to the bathroom...ALOT....but it also caused extreme cramping and stomach discomfort. Maybe for your average Joe (or Jill) it won't cause any harm...but for me...it caused alot of pain. I would just caution...if you start feeling cramps...STOP...I thought it was an adjustment period and I went the full 2 weeks...and it got worse. Like I said...some people with unstable digestive systems may already have too much active flora in their systems and activia might be more than you can take. Just an FYI

and does cause any number of intestinal upsets.

I do feel better! I have one small concern about using fructose as a sweetner (affects the lipids which may increase one's cholesterol)but since I don't any other foods sweetened with fructose, it may not be a concern. I wonder if there is an unsweetened plain available?

I had not been eating anything else out of the ordinary those days. I've been reading lots of boards about this, and it seems there are a few people on eat message/comment board who have had my same experience. I'm wondering if there is something Dannon isn't telling us. Is this stuff similar to Olestra in that it causes severe intestinal problems in some people, but the company was able to avoid having to warn people? Thanks Holly, for your info. I was wondering if this was a "transition period", but if it got worse for you I'm just going to stop eating it because there's a good chance it will get worse for me (I can't imagine worse than it was!).

She advised Activia, so I bought a 4-pack of Peach. I just ate my first one, and it tasted fine. *Then* I decided to look-up what it is supposed to do for you and found that it keeps you regular. It so happens I don't have any problems in that area, so I'll finish my 4-pack and go back to my regular diet.

Just bought a container of this on the weekend,,,out of curiousity after seeing a commercial Was going to go for my usual fave vanilla but the prune flavour made me of my great-grandmother (who ate stewed prunes every morning!) so I grabbed that one instead! YUM!! it is delicious! Not sure yet about its effects but it certainly is tasty!

Though I think eating fresh veggies everyday to balance out the fruit also helps. I too have suffered from IBS and multiple digestive issues.I'll keep you posted if any cramping occurs. I did have a little cramping a week ago but didn't think it was related to the yogurt. Since then the cramping did go away.

I'm also interested to see that someone mentioned weight loss in conjunction with this product. I've been losing weight faster since I switched from a "regular" yogurt for my morning snack to Activia. Coincidence?

I initially had a hard time completing a full 2 week trial because of supply problems--my store kept running out and couldn't get more on a timely basis. But, I persisted and am seeing some positive effects after finally being able to buy and eat two weeks worth. My constipation and bloating due to IBS has decreased noticeably.

My new concern is what will happen when I travel or have other disruptions in my life that will prevent me from eating it every day.

I only wish it did not contain frutose syrup because I am watching my waistline. Studies show that any food containing frustose within the 1st 5 ingredients you should not eat, in Activa it is the 3rd ingredient.

I just tried Activia again for the past few days and the cramps and diarrhea started all over again. I eat lots of yogurt because I am lactose intolerant and cannot drink milk. When I eat Activia, my symptoms are the same as if I'd had a glass of milk. I double over with cramps and have very soft diarrhea.
