On Monday, McDonald's will be rolling
out their new "premium roast"
coffee at stores across the country. You may have seen TV ads for the coffee, or even tasted it yourself, as it has
been released in several markets already. It seems that the fast-food giant wants to capitalize on the love of the
American public for gourmet coffee, following in the footsteps of chains like Dunkin Donuts and Burger King, which
recently began to promote its coffee. Another reason for the new coffee is that McDonald's is trying to increase its
share of the breakfast market, as consumers more frequently turn to specialty coffee retailers and grab a pastry with
their lattes. White the coffee is unlikely to be up to the quality of the specialty retailers, it will
certainly be a step up from the "coffee" previously sold at McDonald's. In keeping with the
"premium" theme, the new coffees will be served in insulated cups with the same style of lid seen at places
like Starbucks instead of the usual fast-food hot beverage lid, which has a punch-out flap for drinking
from. According to the McDonald's website, you can get a coupon for a free coffee with any purchase by visiting a
participating store between now and March 4th.

(Maybe it's the water here causing the problem...lots of chlorine in our water). Will definitely try the McD's new coffee...IF it's sold in this area. As to store-bought coffee, prefer the Eight O'Clock coffee. But the best is what you find at the specialty cafes or coffee made from the beans you grind at home. I usually use a French press when making coffee at home.

People that say they don't like Starbucks have to realize that they brew different coffees every few days. It's not the same thing every time you go there. There are a few that I'm not that crazy about. I don't particularly like the Kenya or the Yukon. They are a little too earthy. I like the smoother tastes like the Verona or Peaberry.

3-03-2006 @7:10PM DEE VALENTINE said... As for "fast food Gourmet coffee"? Remember it is in the brew technique and the diligent maintenance of a clean brew station. Cleaning, changing filters, etc. Do we really think that McD's employees will be attentive to the good distribution of their coffee, just as they do the "fine, healthy food" that McD's serves?? I think not. I'll stay with Barnes & Noble's and other gourmet coffee dedicated specialty Cafes. Thank you

Surprising, it is pretty good, slightly better than Dunkin Donuts' coffee, in my opinion. Of course, I'm not a gourmet (I only have about two cups a day and don't really finish either one) but it really isn't bad and I like to think that in my small way I'm supporting Paul Newman's (sigh!) charity.

They have the best coffee I have ever had and once you move away from one it's tough to get good coffee anywhere else. They can keep Starbucks in my opinion it's horrible.

How's this for bad taste: organic coffee from an unfriendly cup. Give me a recycyled cup, hot organic/free trade coffee, and a hot-handle. The hot-handle is new - I just found it - and have been using mine for a month now. Completely green, it hugs any cup into a mug. Now they have T-shirts too 'Get a Grip'. www.hot-handle.com

3-08-2006 @12:16PM John said... I actually liked the old McD coffee a lot and am disappointed in the new. I think it has some chocolate in it too which I can do without. Sorry, but I think Star$ coffee stinks, I love DD coffee and Einsteins too (I am in Miami). This new McD coffee moves away from the DD end toward the Star$ taste and that is not an improvement for me.
BK Joe is nasty but I think that is because of how they brew it. My local McD changed their brewer from the old Bunn to some high-tech machine years back and I hated it - they still had the Bunn at the drive-thru station and I made them give me that even if I was at the counter. They went back to the Bunns.
