Calorie-burning soft drink?

We always enjoy hearing about strange new soft drinks here at Slashfood, and the most recent one to show up on my radar is Celsius. Its claim to fame is that its ingredients (which include caffeine) increase your body's metabolism, thereby helping you burn calories. Elite FX, the Delray Beach, Fla. company that makes Celsius, cites a study where the beverage was shown to increase metabolism by 12 percent over a three-hour period. They say you can lose 17 pounds a year, just by drinking a bottle a day for a year. I'm always skeptical of ways to lose weight without exercise, aren't you? Nevertheless, Celsius recently won "best new energy drink" from Beverage Industry Magazine, according to the Boca Raton News.

Gee, Doc, you are really sympathetic.

I would love to pass your comments around to everyone I know. You would be out of business for sure, because "normal" people need the support of a doctor, not criticism.

My doctor DID recommend GASTRIC to me and it was not for an EASY way out. Seems to me, you need to go back to med school for another course, "Bedside Manner 101".

P.S. I didnt opt for the surgery, I am going it alone. I'll take anything to help along the way.

Very few people have a medical reason why they can't lose weight, and those who continue to use this as an excuse for why they can't lose weight are deluding themselves. You have to be honest with yourself, because the bottom line is, if you are overweight, you are consuming more calories than you are burning. You are either not exercising enough, sneaking food and not counting it, or both. Exercise must be your priority, EVERYDAY!!. I have never had a weight problem mainly because I exercise at least 1 hour a day and I don't eat junk food. I work 50 hours a week and volunteer in the community. YOU HAVE THE TIME!!

Easy killers

3-03-2006 @6:52PM Easy killers said... Man, everybody is jumping all over this lawyer guy for stating the truth. Those who are arguing over this, what you are saying is that some stupid and obese people won't abuse this drink instead of what they are supposed to be doing? Because if you are saying that, you are outside of your mind. The people on here who are overweight and working their ass off for it, great, that's how it's supposed to be done. But for every one person who does it the right way, there are 2-3 who try to take the easy way out and don't see results. So, before you go putting this guy up on the cross, how about think about it before. What, are lawyers supposed to be so all mighty and pious that they can't say something that you disagree with? Grow up...

But unfortunately they made my blood pressure go up. So now I take BP pills instead! :( I used to be a distance runner and was very thin and fit. Back then I made fun of fat people too and would say things like "If they'd just get off their butts and exercise and quit stuffing their face they wouldn't be fat." Now that I'm a middle aged, overweight woman, I'm eating my words! Seems the rules change when you get older. I would not try this product because of the caffeine and my concern about it raising my blood pressure.

For the record, I was offended by the "stupid fat people" remark too but I admit that I had the same attitude in my younger, more immature years. I guess I'm still an idealist because I'm hoping the person who made the comment will post an apology.

Jeff

3-03-2006 @7:55PM Jeff said... I am a nurse at an office of internal medicine. The doctor I work with treats obese patients with diabetes and high blood pressure. I know there are many things to make a person become obese (drug interactions, genetics, glandular etc..). But the reason most of them become obese is totally self induced. We see patient after patient coming in who can't control anything about their weight. They can't stop eating and they don't exercise. And they all want some miracle from us to cure it all so they can keep on doing the same things. We see so many health problems created by obesity-diabetes,high blood pressure, heart disease, vascular problems, kidney failure, ulcers, and intestinal problems-all because most of them can't control what they put in their mouth and the only exercise they get is walking to the refrigerator or to the car to go to McDonalds. They come to us sometimes in tears wanting to change and to make their lives better. And they are really sincere about this (At least at that moment). We give them medicines, SIMPLE exercise routines, and an array of CHOICES of diets. We try to make it as easy for them as humanly possible. And they walk out the door, get the prescription filled and stop by Burger King on the way home. It is so frustrating to really be trying to help people and to see them visit after visit getting worse and worse or at least not any better. We preach to them till we are blue in the face and it seems to go in one ear and out the other. And then we get the phone call-That Mr.or Mrs. so and so is in ICU because they had a heart attack this morning or couldn't get out of bed because they threw their back out turning over or their knees gave out and they fell and broke something. I hate to sound mean but we see this so much and it gets so frustrating because I really want to help them but I can only do so much. And for those of you who say"how do you know what they do when they leave", we know because alot of their concerned family members call us and tell us everything, and it turns out most of the patients either lied or just "left out" some things in the office. I agree with the people who were going off at "lawschool". It is wrong to call them stupid. They are not stupid, but they are IGNORANT, just plain IGNORANT and until they can realize and admit that they will never change. I'm not trying to be mean but sometimes the truth hurts, and the truth is there is no magic cure or pill. The cure is simple, control and willpower are the only known "cures". These work every time without fail until you stop doing them. They are the "Lifetime" diet and as long as you do them your life will get better and better-GUARANTEED. As for this drink it might help, but not by itself. Diet and exercise have to be followed with any of these. It might raise your metabolism(I doubt as much as they claim though) but if you are not getting off the couch the metabolism isn't going to do you any good. I have been working with obese people for 18 years and I have heard and seen it all. There is no magic cure or pill and there never will be! God bless and KEEP TRYING!

Caffine isnt very healthy in the long run and the risks probably outweigh any positive results. Adopting a healthy lifestyle and living in moderation can help even the most stubborn of weight problems and working in conjunction with a dr.helps. This is a product i dont see being a long run help in any fashion. I do however see "Finished.Law.School" needs to finish the school of manners and good taste and stop looking like a moron online and in life. Godd luck to all

Acouple of points to Nikki-#1-thin is not always healthy but obese is NEVER healthy. #2-Apples $.69 per pound, oranges $.49 per pound, bananas $.59 per pound, potatoes $.29 per pound, Carrots $.79 per pound etc... These don't cost any more than a package of Ramen noodles and are alot more healthy. Don't have to be rich to eat right. CHOICE not class makes for healthy eating. Cheap food is not healthy but healthy food is not expensive either. #3-yes people should stop looking at a persons body for their looks but should look at their body for their health. Looks can very much determine health. If a person is obese then they are 99% not healthy. So yes looks should mean something just not what most people think it should.

I am so offended by your "stupid obese people" comment. Do you think overweight people want to be overweight, there are so many factors, food addiction, or thyroid, or depression. You get my drift. Why don't you jump off your personal soap box and apologize. Creep!! And good luck on someone hiring you. NOT!!!

How did you know I got that cheeseburger on the way home from filling my blood pressure meds prescription? :)I called it my "last supper" thinking that I was going to quit the fast food thing because of my BP. But as soon as I got my mind on other things I forgot all about my BP and have been eating junk just like before.

I'm glad I plugged in to this discussion because it really has made me think a lot about my food choices. I've had a hard time with appetite control in the last few years because of depression. The depression was making me lethargic, not interested in doing anything and unable to concentrate long enough to even make out a grocery list. And I hated going to the grocery store and consequently I never had anything at home to cook. And if I did have, I wouldn't cook probably. I'd put off doing anything about eating until I was so hungry I felt like I was going to pass out and I needed something fast....ie. FAST FOOD. I've done a lot better since I've been taking an antidepressant. I'm not as driven by cravings as I was before.

Years ago a book came out called "It's Not What You're Eating, It's What's Eating You" and it was about emotional eating. I really believe in that too because I know I eat for reasons other than to feed my body. I eat when I'm bored. I eat when I'm scared. If something good happens, I celebrate with food. If something bad happens, I grieve with food. Louise Hay says if you heal your emotions then the weight will go away automatically. I'm working on that one.

A few years ago I lost 40 pounds taking Metabolife. It really did kill my appetite, even my sweet tooth. But it also made me really jittery and my heart raced probably from the caffeine. I wish we could just eat like my dogs do and just have a big sack of food in the closet and munch down a cup in the morning and a cup in the afternoon and not think about food any more. :)
