As if having Disney's Celebration, Florida, wasn't enough, now Domino's
Pizza founder and conservative Christian Tom Monaghan is planning a town near the Everglades that will operate based on
Christian principles. The town of Ave Maria will be built in southwest Florida, in the Naples/Immokalee area, and town
regulations may prohibit such no-nos as abortion, birth control and pornography, a recent Times article reported. The town will also be
the site of Ave Maria University, the first Catholic university built in
the U.S. in 40 years. The university will house 5,000 of the estimated 30,000 total residents planned for Ave Maria
when it starts being a town in 2007.

As a formerly Catholic Christian, let me inform you that there are plenty of conservative Christians who would strongly object to anything so marian as to be named 'Ave Maria'.

By law, they can't discriminate against non-Christians moving in their town (unless a membership fee is required).
And what happens if you do get an abortion? It would be unconstitutional to have a law saying you have to quit your job and move because you did something unbecoming of a Christian.
I think they're setting themselves up for failure.
Disney got tired of running their perfect little city, Celebration, Florida, and they finally turned it over to the people. I have a feeling the same thing will happen to Ave Maria, FL. Just give it 10 years to happen.
And I'd like to be the first in line to open a topless bar - I'd make a mint!

7-23-2007 @4:02PM Rachel said... that is the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard in my entire life. what is it with conservative christians and wanting to take over the world? why would you need an entire community of people that think exactly the same way you do? the only thing conservative christians are interested in is control, telling people how to think, how to act, how to live. it makes me sick.
