Too many long, soju-fueled evening in LA's Koreatown have scarred me enough that I don't drink too much of
the stuff anymore. However, there are some Girls' Nights out when you just have to raise your shot glass, shriek
"Gum-bae!" then sling it back like you're on Spring Break in Daytona Beach.
This was my first time with Bek Seju. We didn't know what the "herbal infusion" was that was described on the menu, but when the waitress brought the bottle to the table, I sniffed it and recoiled. Ginseng. Not ginger, but ginseng - which is a highly regarded herb in Asian cultures, but smells like mud.
Nonetheless, we drank it all, and after about the 4th shot, the muddy herbal fragrance isn't so noticeable. In fact, it almost seems to pair perfectly with strongly spiced, chargrilled Korean barbecue.
